A construction worker was arrested Monday and charged with murdering an actress who was found hanging from a shower rod in an apartment she was having renovated. Police charged Diego Pillco with second-degree murder in the slaying of Adrienne Shelly, Detective Kevin Czartoryski said.
Pillco, 19, was picked up early Monday and was questioned for several hours until "he made statements," said Czartoryski, who would not say what they were.
Shelly, who appeared in the movie "Factotum" last year, was renovating the Greenwich Village apartment she used as her residence and office. Pillco, one of the workers, was one of the last people seen going into her apartment, police said. Shelly, whose birth name was Adrienne Levine, was found Wednesday at about 6 p.m. hanging over her bathtub. Police were hesitant to label the case a suicide, observing that no note was found and that sneaker prints that did not match Shelly's shoes were recovered from the bathtub. A spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office, Ellen Borakove, said late Monday that her agency had not determined the cause of Shelly's death, whether by strangulation or other means, or whether it was a homicide. Shelly, who was born in Queens and grew up on Long Island, was raising a 3-year-old daughter, Sophie, with her husband, Andy Ostroy. Shelly, 40, was best known for her roles in the films "The Unbelievable Truth," in which she played Audry Hugo in 1989, and "Trust," in which she starred as Maria Coughlin in 1990. She also appeared as Jerry in "Factotum" with Matt Dillon. She worked steadily during her career in film, theater and television but later turned to writing and directing, making her directorial debut with "Sudden Manhattan" in 1996. She recently wrote and directed the film "Waitress," starring Keri Russell and Nathan Fillion.

He was doing contracting work on the apartment below the victim's.
She went downstairs to yell at him for continuing to use heavy equipemnt after she asked him not to - she was angry because he woke up her three year old who was napping upstairs.
According to the murderer, he was angry at her for yelling so he punched her in the face and hit her so hard she slammed to the floor.
After he couldn't revive her, he tied a sheet around her neck and hung her from a shower rod to fake a suicide.
He left sneaker marks on the toilet seat as he hung her and the police found the same sneaker marks where he was working and found the shoes matching them on his feet.
He is an illegal immigrant from Ecuador who cannot speak English.
I haven't seen it but thanks for the report. I don't know how she could expect the guy to not make noise during a renovation.

The story was on the cover of the New York Daily News. However, the fact that he was illegal was buried quite a ways down.

It's front page news on at least five papers this morning and a lead-in story on at least three local news programs - and these are all media outlets serving a population of approximately 25 million people. That's 1 out of every 12 people in America.
Hardly buried.
BTW, I doubt he will get life.
He will get 7-15 most likely, and then will be scheduled for deportation to Ecuador upon release.
i'll tune into local NYC news tonight, let's see if they mention he is an illegal.
A 20-year NYPD Homicide detective once told me that the police's best weapon against criminals is that the average criminal is dumb.
When I worked as a doorman in NYC, there were strict rules about what kind of equipment contractors could use and what hours they could be used.
She was probably deciding to give him a tongue-lashing before taking the next step of calling the police.
Which she was well within her rights to do.
Also, in my experience, decent people ask their neighbors what hours are good for them.
I will say it again.....
Depending on where you live, your chances of being a victim of a violent crime by an illegal alien are higher than your chances of being killed by an Islamic terrorist.

I wonder if the renovation was being done under a contractor? If he knew Pillco was illegal [strange name for an Ecuadorian...]
