"...The film opens with Borat gleefully introducing his village in Kazakhstan (actually filmed in Hungary), where he boasts his sister is the No. 4 prostitute, a neighbor is a rapist ('naughty, naughty') - and where he provides commentary for 'the running of the Jew,' an event in which giant papier-maché puppets are attacked, along with their offspring..."On the other hand, from ronbosoldier.blogspot.com:
"...After viewing this movie at Universal Studios in Orlando yesterday, Ronbo gives this mock documentary a five star rating for gross political incorrectness towards the Muslims. The best scene was the 'Running of the Jews' in which the pronounced anti-Semitism of Islam is mocked..."
Sorry.I guess that I will actually have to WATCH the movie before commenting on it further. :o)
Just got back and I am almost speechless. I haven't laughed that hard in ages. This movie is not for the faint of heart, that's for sure. Cohen is a genius.
Obviously you're entitled to your opinion and what you want to watch. I am still curious, though, about the release forms. The only reference upthread I could find was a rather vague one to the reporterette who supposedly lost her job because of her inviting him on her show. I'm not sure that qualifies for someone requiring a release as they know they're being telecast anyway. In the end she didn't make the final cut, so a release wasn't necessary.
Sorry, Cohen has been doing this "Borat" thing for quite a few years, and it should be a lesson to any so-called "journalist" to do their homework. If more did, would there be so much liberal claptrap in the media??
Lucky thing!
I had too much to do around the house and couldn't break away to go see it. Maybe this week! :)
As funny as that seems, his performance really is incredibly seamless. Not for one second do you think he's not who he's portraying. The guy is brilliant.
I'm so glad our reactions were identical.
I'm with you. I only posted that snippet in response to this statement:
This is a mockumentery...not real people. It is a movie. People said what Borat wanted them to say. People acted the way Borat wanted them to act.
I understand. I had to sneak away for the lunchtime matinee on Friday in order to work it in.
If you see it, please let me know what you think.
= )
There is also some Jaywalking in there. Those who want to make the final cut have to play along: the more ludicrous and embarrassing, the better.
Just got back from the film. It is funny in two different ways. If one accepts the premise of the film, that is, "here is this clueless geek from unknownistan trying to learn American customs and culture," one can easily laugh at his mishaps and cultural malaprops. On the other hand, as one who has spent some time outside the US, I can easily imagine the producers repackaging the film for non-US viewers with the premise: "Look at all the stuff we were able to pull off against these dumb shit Americans." Borat will in all likelihood be the film industry's analog to the music industry's "crossover hit."
