DETROIT -- Kenny Rogers pitched eight scoreless innings Sunday, running his shutout streak this postseason to 23 innings while helping the Tigers even the World Series at a game apiece.
And yet, all anyone can talk about is Rogers' dirty left hand.
Early in the Tigers' 3-1 win over the Cardinals, there appeared to be a dispute about something on Rogers' pitching hand. Television cameras caught a brownish substance, possibly dirt, on the palm of Rogers' left hand in the first inning, and showed it several times. By the second inning the substance was gone, and the pitcher's hand looked clean.

LOL, good point, bears repeating.
cough, Mark McGuire, cough cough
Let's try an experiment. Get a Rosin bag, toss it in the dirt (this is where it lies.), now work out a little to get your hand a little sweaty, now pick up the Rosin bag and wipe your hand off so you have some grip. Toss it back down IN THE DIRT. Now look at your hand and remember where the dirt is. Now, wash your hands, get the sweaty again. Pick up the rosin bag and wipe your hand, NOTE WHERE THE DIRT IS. $10 bucks it will be in the same spot.
PLayers are creatures of habit -- they work out and warm up exactly the same every game. They pick up the rosin bag and wipe thier hand exactly the same way, everything is done the same every time -- that is how they get into a rythm. As a result, it is very likely that a pitcher who uses a dirty Rosin bag, will have dirt marks on his hands in the same exact spot every time.

ROFL, first of all, a rosin bag in cold weather doesn't help, it hurts. Also, I've been around rosin bags for 20 years....never once have I seen it turn that color on a hand. Pine tar, yes. Rosin, no.
I'm a huge Cardinal fan, but you'll get no argument from me on that one!
I'm just an observer. I'm not out there trying to hit the baseball, so I'm not the target of Rogers' ingeneious ploy to convince the professional hitters of the St. Louis Cardianls that he is really Gaylord Perry.
Cordially,
Oh honestly. Deception and psychological ploys have been part of the game since the game began. Maybe we should enact some "morality" rules that prevent a batter from faking a bunt (or vice versa), or prevent a pitcher from hiding the ball in his glove, or prevent a base stealer from walking off a lead, or prevent base stealing for crying out loud. What an outrage that is.
You never played, did you?
Exhibit B
1. Rogers has dirt on hand and is asked to wash it off.
2. Rogers said the umpire told him to slow down between innings, and that nobody told him to clean his hands and no one complained about it. Says he saw it himself and washed it off.
3. The umpires say they asked him to wash it off.
4. Leland says they made him wash it off.
Cordially
I don't have a dog in the fight but given La Russa's history if there really was an issue don't you think he'd raise more of a stink?
He probably just forgot his handkerchief...and used his hand.
Now what about those other seven innings?

I hope if you have kids you are a little sharper than that.
On that note, one interesting fact in this "scandal" is the silence of the Cardinals. LaRussa has probably talked himself blue telling the players to forget about it. And gone sleepless hoping they do.
I swear it's like everybody was born yesterday.
The substance was on his pitching hand, not his catching hand.
So why does it matter if he wore his glove?
Cheating is not part of the game. From juice to emery boards, to loaded bates to pine tar.

Oh good lord. Give me a break. There are RULES in the game. Hiding the ball, faking a bunt, even dropping an infield fly to try to get a double up because an ump failed to call it. It's all part of the "game" But when loaded bats are used, pitching aids, juice, whatever is BANNED is then called CHEATING.
Yeah, I'm the only guy in the state of Missouri that never played ball.
Right. And while they're at it, get the commissioner, the attorney general, and a district court in on their explanation. Throw Rogers in jail, I say.
LaRussa's been around the block a few times. He knows what's going on. Hear him complaining? He's just trying his best to get his players not to think about it.

No, that's not his style. He has been berated many times for his passive approach in situations like this. He may walk out on the field, but he will walk back without a fight. After The White Rat days of the 80's, we know the difference between a passive and agressive coach for sure.
If you played, you were a mighty gullible player. Although oddly enough, there have always been a lot those around.
McCarver remarked that it seemed very unusual for any player to take his glove with him into the clubhouse, and further, to wear it when he was shaking hands with people.
Cordially,
Probably because, as you demonstrate so effectively, the mystery dirt is a great way to crawl inside someone's head and screw with them.
