Ohio State remained the top team in the latest BCS standings that were released on Sunday. But if the Buckeyes take a look back over the shoulder, they'll see a familiar foe: Michigan.
The Wolverines, boosted by a 20-6 home win over Iowa on Saturday, vaulted past idle USC in the new standings. It is the first time since Oct. 27, 2001 that the same conference has held the top two spots in the standings (Nebraska at No. 1 and Oklahoma at No. 2, both out of the Big 12).
Meanwhile, West Virginia leapfrogged Auburn for the No. 4 spot after a convincing 37-11 win over Connecticut. Auburn also won easily this weekend, with a 38-13 decision over Tulane.
Making their BCS debuts this week were Texas A&M at No. 21 and Washington State at No. 25. The Aggies needed a blocked extra point in overtime to beat Oklahoma State 34-33, while Wazzu stunned Oregon 34-23. The Ducks fell nine spots this week to No. 23.
With the loss to Michigan, Iowa, ranked 23rd last week, dropped out of the top 25. Tulsa, despite a 35-14 win at Memphis, also dropped out of the standings. The Golden Hurricanes had been No. 25.
Here's a question to consider. I've heard this possibility bantered about on some sports talk radio shows. Lets say the at the end of the season that there is only one undefeated team (presumably the winners of the OSU-Team from up north game). And lets say that the OSU-TFUN game is a 24-23 game with the winning FG coming on the last play of the game. Would the BCS dare have a rematch of Ohio State and Michigan in the BCS final championship game?
Boise State should be undefeated.
Weren't Florida and Florida State put in a national championship rematch in the Sugar Bowl after the 1993 season?
Who did they play?
Your right, but in 96.
Nobody of stature, really. But they did beat Oregon State (Pac 10) 42-14.
They would not rematch, imho.
They are also concerned with TV audience.
First let me say I'm a huge Buckeye fan and a long time Tressel fan. I seriously doubt they would do it because they would take the winner of the Bucks-Wolverine game and match it up to someone else who would most likely jump in the polls. I doubt the public would want to see it either.Just my opinion....GO BUCKS.
That was 1996 I believe. Of course back then the PAC10 and the Big Ten were not part of the "BCS" (It wasn't called the BCS then it was called something else).
My take is that it should work out that way, but won't. But reality is that there will probably be an undefeated team coming out of the Big Least as well, and Cal or USC out of the Pac 10.
The Vandals of the University of Idaho. They beat them 40-28 and still remain undefeated.
57-39-6
My take is the BCS poll is rigged toward schools that get wide national exposure on TV from the PAC-10, the ACC, the SEC and the Big East.
They really need playoffs. I say stage them so that SuperBowl Sunday has college and NFL game on the same day.
WVa looks wonderful.
The Bucks, though. Great. Here's to Buckeye Nation.
LOL. A Boise State fan, I presume?
FWIW, I agree with you completely. That's why we need a playoff system in place that will put all challengers on the field and let us see who's really the national champion. Last year I'd have put my Nittany Lions up against Texas or USC, and I'm confident the result would've been darn close.
Nope.
Now that would be something. I'd be pretty worn out by the end of the day...
That'd make for a long day of sitting in front of the TV. I don't even watch the Super Bowl pre-game show which is too damn long.
Yes it was 1996. Florida beat FSU 52-20 in the Sugar Bowl to win their fist (and so far only) national championship.
