Time for a new Free Republic folding@home thread.

Our Free Republic team of 391 members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 63th place (with 1,039 active CPUs - 74,650 completed Work Units and 13.75 million points).

Hello, beginning next week I will have no internet access for a month.

Is there anyway I can stockpile several work units to work on so I'm not idling for the rest of the month after finishing one?

Thoughts while googling a more accurate answer:

Start two instances on F@H, one a service and one a GUI. I suppose you could also create up to 8 instances of F@H. Name your directories unique names such as F@H-1, etc. I recommend using F@H as a service rather than a GUI to do this.

Start each instance and get it running. During setup do not choose "Deadlineless" WUs - F@H is out of them right now. There may be another place in setup to force the downloading of multiple WUs at once. I'll try it after I post and let you know.

I understand that F@H can have up to 10 instances queued up, but I have never used that feature.

After a little searching here is my best advice.

It seems that only the No Deadline WUs could be downloaded in batches. Unfortunately Stanford is not releasing any Deadlineless WUs now. Therefore my advice in #62 will work.

What you are doing by installing 8 unique instances of F@H service is to download 8 work units, and to split processing power between all of them. It will take 8 times as long to finish but it accomplishes the goal.

I would set each of the services to run at 11% of total CPU. that will give you 88% usage. Also set each instance with Advanced Work Units = Yes. More complicated WUs, should allow more time for completion.

Let us know how this work when you come back online.

Most WUs have deadlines of over 30 days.
