Talking about harming the president will land you in jail.
But on Oct. 27, for the price of a movie ticket, you can see what would happen if someone killed President Bush in Death of a President.
The movie will open locally at Kendall Square Cinema in Cambridge and Embassy Cinema in Waltham, both owned by Landmark Theatres. Its also set to screen at Cinema 95 in Salisbury and Entertainment Cinemas in South Dennis and Springfield.
Most of the nations largest cinema companies, however, wont touch the controversial film.
Boston film critics got their first glimpse of the fictional documentary and whodunit yesterday at AMC Loews Boston Common. But the public wont see it there or anywhere else in the 5,601-screen chain.
When it comes down to it, we feel its wrong to play a film that portrays an assassination of a sitting president, said AMC spokeswoman Melanie Bell.
Regal Entertainment Group, the nations largest cinema company, also passed. Dedham-based National Amusements (operators of Showcase Cinemas) hasnt finished its review process.
Newmarket Films has secured 75 initial outlets through arthouses and independent cinemas, including Houston, home to Bushs parents, former President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush.
Writer and director Gabriel Range previously imagined a transportation breakdown in the 2003 film The Day Britain Stopped.
In production notes, Range acknowledged: I always knew that the controversy on the film would happen, but I genuinely believe that the premise is justified and that anyone who sees the film will not think that it is gratuitous.
The movie won the International Critics Prize last month at Torontos film festival.
It focuses more on the political fallout of the assassination than on the killing itself, although its fair to say you shouldnt expect to see Bush in Chicago on Oct. 19, 2007.
Ditto that.
I'd enjoy a movie about serial killers stalking producers, directors and actors. Now THAT would be entertainment.
Naturally. (rolling eyes)
So you are going to belittle them and make them feel inferior? :)
Oh so I guess it's like Fahrenheit 9/11...
