(10/16/06) - Imagine this.
You are hooked on alcohol and you want help getting off the booze.
You go to your doctor, and he or she says, "Drop some acid."
That's right. LSD, the infamous drug of choice for many hippies in the 1960s and '70s.
Lysergic acid diethylamide, the drug that caused hallucinations or "tripping," was, of course, outlawed, giving it immeasurable street cred in its time, before fading away as flower-painted bodies grew into gray-flannel suits.
So, in the 21st century, why would a respected medical doctor even consider prescribing LSD as a wonder drug to help cure alcoholism?

Yeah, right. Forget Tradition 10, and all that...
The article does mention that 'one of the co-founders' (Bill Wilson) experimented with LSD. This is documented, 'twas in the 50's. His hope was that its use would lead others to a 'spiritual experience such as he (and many of us) had, usually prior to Step 1. It didn't work, and his experimentation was very short-lived.
According to Dyck, even Alcoholics Anonymous endorses the LSD research.

Yep. Ritalin and what not messes up kids a lot more than beer and pot ever could.

For those who may not know,
Tradition 10. Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the A.A. name ought never be drawn into public controversy.

BINGO! Just what I was ref'g to a couple of posts up..I read that so many years ago I've forgotten the details. I did, however, "experiment" with a TON of books on "spirituality" in the first few years...I found (as Dr Bob did) that it made me crazier. Went back to the BB and 12 & 12...and haven't strayed. It continues to be the most remarkable way of life, based on the simplest of steps..

Speaking as an alcoholic with nearly 16 years of sobriety who took a lot of LSD while drinking, I can promise you that THIS DOES NOT WORK!
Now you tell me....oy.
