I saw someone here on FreeRepublic once say that they taped several pieces of black construction paper into a loop, and then faxed it back to the number they got the junk faxes from.

They set it to go on a Friday afternoon and left it going all weekend....

Fortunately, fax machines will soon be as rare as typewriter ribbons.

Those things are a nuisance, aren't they? My fax machine is the roller ink type, and those faxes can use up a ribbon in no time. I, too, have tried to call the #'s, and I think they must be doing an end run around the law through some technicality.

The Do Not Call Registry doesn't apply to fax numbers?

You can sue them for $1500 per fax, if you're determined to go through with it. I believe the law is the Telecommunications Consumer Protection Act (1990).

When you call them asking them to remove your fax # from their list, you simply confirm to them that it IS a good fax #...it's the same concept as the spam storm.

Pathfinder's faxes say they took money from a company called Gemini Market News for the privilege of sending unsolicited faxes to my machine. I did a little research this afternoon, having received dozens of these faxes over the past year. A little googling found this item --> The Gary Halbert Letter You'll note that Mr. Halbert's newsletter says to send payment in the form of a check made out to "Pathfinder Marketing". And who is this Gary Halbert? Well, lookee at this little item from the US District Court in Massachuesetts --> Stock fraud bust, order to cease & desist And here's this Google search result that indicates Mr. Halbert and his companies, Cherrywood Publishing and Bond Halbert, have gotten into quite a few spats with the SEC and other branches of the US government for securities and trade fraud. So I faxed a color-reversed copy of the unsolicited fax in question to Mr. Halbert's attorney, with an embedded request to have Mr. Halbert stop sending his unwanted faxes. The US Court system listed Mr. Halbert's attorney's fax number near the bottom of their order requiring Mr. Halbert to stop commiting securities fraud, so that came in real handy.
