Yankees down to their last 27 outs!

Posted on 10/06/2006 9:02:44 PM PDT by ElTiante

Ok Seriously.

I've never been a fan of the guy, but wow did Rogers look sharp tonight. 7 2/3, 0 runs, 8K. He really had something to prove tonight and did he ever.

A-Fraud AKA Mr March, went 0-3 and is batting .125 for the series.

Watching the Yankees lose NEVER GETS OLD!

My favorite part -- when the announcers said that this Yankee team doesn't have a LEADER like Paul O'Neil who would get on the veterans and fire them up.

No mention of Jeter of course, but the captain's intangibles must be getting rusty, ha ha ha

Now that other NY team is running into trouble...Dodgers (formerly the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers) tie it 4-4 on a Kent 2 run HR.

Where he has failed is in drafting players that can come to the major leagues. He has had 4 drafts to show for his trouble and he has no position players in the minors worth a damn.

As for position players, there's Ellsbury and next year's second baseman, Pedroia.

But if you're gonna rag on the position players you have to recognize the pitching, starting with Papelbon, but continuing with Clay Buchholz and company in A-AA.

Plus Cla Meredith who we inexplicably GAVE to the Padres, one of Theo's many poor trade and FA decisions.

Pedroia is a marginal defensive 2nd baseman at this point in his development (will not backhand anything) and he is neither quick enough or with enough of an arm to play second. As a plus I like the way he works counts and he hits line drives unlike Loretta. Outside of him Murphy is the next guy who might stick on the roster but as a 4th. (He seems better than Kapler though)

I'll reserve judgement on Ellsbury but that's 3 guys at most out of how many they drafted in the past few years?

I will credit Papelbon as a great find and Meredith was a panic trade just like the trade for Lopez/Riske was.

But, he has shown that he cannot rate bullpen help and his big free agent signings have busted them.

If they wanted Josh Beckett then they had to take Lowell as part of the deal. Lowell played great 3rd base and he cracked 68 extra base hits so he wasn't a waste by any stretch.

The Yankees' Johnny Damon, Jason Giambi and Alex Rodriguez watch the Tigers celebrate. (Newsday / David L. Pokress) Oct 7, 2006

And yes, you're right about Joe Morgan. I got carried away. If I hear him say "dead red" one more time. Strike Morgan. I must have gotten carried away at seeing the Yanks lose.

I hardly ever watch the Sunday night ESPN game - I'm always doing family stuff then, so don't hear the difference between San Francisco Jon and National Jon.

"Just like the Twins were the favorites to win last week, when they were going to sweep the A's, right? The Tigers still have a long way to go to get to the ALCS, unless you figure they have a way to have Rogers pitch again in the series?"
~~~
As it happens, the Tigers play this upcoming Tuesday night in the ALCS; I guess it wasn't that long a way to go after all now, was it?
Well, that's the thing, they haven't drafted that many.
In 2003 they got Murphy and Matt Murton (traded in the Nomar deal) in the first round, and Mickey Hall was a bust. That was it for position players in the first five rounds.
In 2004 they got Pedroia in the second round, their only position player selected in the first five. (And from what I've seen and read his 2B defense is pretty good.)
Three out of four making the majors is a pretty decent record.
When you get to 2005 and 2006, if these guys pan out most of them won't be for another two or more years. Ellsbury has been everything he was billed as and is on track to start in CF in 2008 if not sooner, Jed Lowrie had a rough second year and may move back to 2B, Jon Egan had an excellent year but he's only 19 and years away, and Reid Engel is likewise years away if he puts it together.
Likewise the international signings under Theo's rule are long-term things -- Luis Soto was signed in 2003 and is still only 20 years old and 3 years away from the majors, if he can get healthy.
I think it was quite a long way they went, shutting down those Yankees bats for that long. It was an amazing accomplishment for Bonderman, especially after Rogers yesterday. The Tigers played a great series, but I don't think Leyland would agree with you that the series was over once the Tigers were up 2-1. If I was a manager I wouldn't rest being up 2-1, especially against a team like the Yankess. Maybe you should sent a telegram to the A's, telling them they needn't bother to show up for the ALCS? Since Minnesota deserved it more, they could play instead?
I think the Yankees would agree. Oh, they might not admit it. But there was clearly no fight in them. They looked at Jaret Wright on the mound, saw the loss coming, got scared and folded like a card table.
I don't agree. Jared Wright is a good pitcher. Jeremy Bonderman had a fantastic performance. Did the Tigers give up when they saw Kenny Rogers on the mound, considering he had been a chewtoy for the Yankees in the past? No, and Rogers came out and threw the game of his life. There's a reason they actually play the games. Sometimes the best teams can lose a series, and other teams can overachieve. The Yankees could have easily come back and won the last two games, but Bonderman came out and pitched a second great game for the Tigers. I think Bonderman and Rogers deserve the credit, I don't think they were just lucky to be against a team that gave up.
ROFLMAO .....
No, 'cause they're not a bunch of damn choke artist sissies.
Do you know ANYTHING about baseball?
Have you ever played sports before? Apparently not, because you think the game is played on paper. Last week, everyone said the Tigers were the choke artists, after they lost the AL Central on the last day of the year. After one game, they said the series against the Yankees was over. But they came back with three good games. But, why bother playing the games, since you know everything that's going to happen. Now, the Tigers can play the hottest team in baseball, the Minnesota Twins, who everyone says will go to the Series, because they are fighters who battled to overtake the Tigers on the last day, after they beat the choke-artist Oakland A's, who always lose in the first round. Please, tell me who will win the Tigers-Twins AlCS and how many games it will last, so I can put a bet on it, using your perfect knowledge.
So other people say a bunch of stupid BS and you're gonna hold me accountable? Please, run off and play on the swings 'cause you don't belong on the sandlot.
Jared Wright should be shipped in a box to china. I hope he goes next season. As for Kenny Rogers who knew that years later the Yankee who sucked and we cursed out every time he pitched would come back and bite us in the ARs!
GOOD GOD I JUST NOTICED I CAN CHECK MY SPELLING!
