Word For The Day, Thursday, Roctober 5, 2006 - rowel
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | Roctober 5, 2006 | secret garden

Posted on 10/05/2006 4:49:16 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

rowel • \ROW-ul ("OW" as in "cow")\ • verb
1 : to goad with or as if with the pointed disk at the end of a spur
2 : vex, trouble Marked by lighthearted unconcern or indifference; carefree; nonchalant.

Example sentence:
With one of the best fastballs in the league combined with a wicked changeup, Lester roweled the opposing line-up for his second career no-hitter.

Etymology: If you've seen Western movies, you've seen rowels. The noun "rowel" names the circular, point-covered disk on the end of a spur that is used to urge powerful steeds to maximum speeds. But cowboys didn't invent rowels; knights in shining armor were sporting them even before the 12th century. English speakers of yore picked up the noun "rowel" from the Anglo-French "roele," meaning "small wheel" ("roele" is also an ancestor of the word "roulette"). By the end of the 1500s, "rowel" was also being used as a verb for any process of prodding or goading that was as irritating as being poked in the side with a rowel.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Sorry; I don't have anything on that website. (Found out about it from a magazine I read, SMART COMPUTING.)

I recently got Rachel Ray's magazine.....which features her and her dog....she seems to have a penchant for checking out people's refrigerators and whether or not they feed people food to their dogs......I bet you would like her. ;^)

I should add that I would never have a bee costume, simply because I am TERRIFIED of bees.

Old childhood phobia -- never got over it, sorry to say. Snakes, other bugs don't bother me at all. But bees -- euww!

To this day, I'm afraid to eat outdoors. People tease me about it. With the holiday of Succoth coming up (Jews eat in booths), I'm in big trouble. Yellow jacket season.

(Actually, some of those beedog costumes look more like yellow jackets.)

I hear the Delaware congressman has taken ill. Thanks to you, I find the timing of it suspicious.

I wouldn't get to excited. That's just a dude denying he plays for the other team.

Now the part about Dem operatives, that's the good news.

Call me callous, but any suggestion that this "kid" was over 18 and playing along with Foley to laugh at him shows that this is being played by the media and the dems way out of proportion. While female teachers are seducing young boys -- let me just say I am deprogrammed to respond with hysteria.

Omigosh, Toby is there too, fretting about sock monkeys. How does someone explain that to their boss, when they're caught doing something like that online? A news forum, sure, it's current events but a sock monkey or bee dog site? Good luck explaining that to the LAN manager.

LOL!!!!!

He has had a couple of small strokes about 2 weeks ago.

He'll still win re-election in a landslide.

You mean he won't throw the election just to cover his arse?

Poor choice of words on my part.

Darnit,

I'd just kind of like to get all the gay sex scandals out of the way at once.

That way, in the future, we can get back to good old fashioned heterosexual sex scandals, hopefully with smokin hot babes. That's the way nature intended it :)

Hope he gets better. Platelets carry the hemoglobin, right? So, wouldn't his level of activity (respiration effectiveness) go down if there were fewer in each liter of blood?
