Who is he and what killed him?
Those are the questions authorities are trying to answer in connection with the death of a man clad in black leather, found with a neck collar hooked on a wrought iron fence in Greenwich Village.
Thursday, the city's medical examiner's office said an autopsy failed to determine how the man died.
The body was discovered at 6:40 a.m. Wednesday by a woman walking her dog on Hudson Street, police said. He was dressed in black leather, including a mask, and his face was pressed against the fence, police said. A spiked dog collar around his neck was snagged on the wrought iron fence between 424 and 426 Hudson St.
Police said the man may have been there at least an hour before anyone realized he was dead. Police said the man had been seen wandering around the area at about 4:30 a.m.
There were no obvious signs of trauma on the man's body, and a police source yesterday said detectives do not suspect the man was the victim of foul play.
Other than the victim's race and age -- white and in his late 30s or early 40s -- police know little about the man. He had no identification on him, police said, and no one has stepped forward claiming to know him.
The medical examiner said more tests will be performed to determine the cause of death, a process likely to take at least another week.
