Well, apparently they attack kids. I don't know what your parental mindset is, but that would bother me.
LOL, I guess that might work, too.
How about homeless to the squirrels?
How do you distinguish between an "innocent quirrel" and a guilty one?
I have kids that love these rats with fluffy tails... otherwise they might meet with an untimely demise.
Good Cop Bad Cop? McCoy could do it.
LOL. Are you one of those "I love L&O" guys I see on the advertisements?
No, but I do like it :)
"Besides, I don't believe anyone could get away with killing one squirrel, let alone "a bunch" in a place like the People's Republic of Santa Monica. You don't know what you are talking about."
They gassed the ground squirrels in their burrows.
Calif. City Opts To Gas Park's Squirrels
http://cbs2.com/watercooler/watercooler_story_041093852.html
SANTA MONICA, Calif. The city of Santa Monica, Calif., is in trouble with environmentalists for the way they eradicated their squirrel population: An unannounced, weekend fumigation of the animals' burrows under Palisades Park.
Did you read the article?
There squirrels weren't attacking anyone, until AFTER the city was trying to starve them to death, by locking the trashcans, having extra park patrol and warning people ( and for all we know threaten them with fines) to NOT feed the squirrels.
All the squirrel was trying to do is get the muffin. The people responsible for the squirrel attack is the city.
Boo friggin hoo. What about the fleas? I bet some fleas died in the gassing too. Did you shed a tear for them?
So, if it was a homeless person that tried to mug the kid for his muffin, you'd support the homeless person, too?
Squirrels carry disease and can be a general menace. I hope they keep cleaning up. Start in Santa Monica, and continue moving due east... but instead of gassing below ground, perhaps they could do it above ground and take care of some liberals while they're at it.
I just found an article about PETA's reaction to the poisoning of the squirrels in Santa Monica.
They applauded Santa Monica for stopping the practice ( after they killed all the squirrels). You can't make this up.
Santa Monica Wins Kudos from Animal Rights Group

PETA applauds Santa Monicas efforts to end the indiscriminate poisoning of the ground squirrel population in Palisades Park, Boyles said. What they are doing really is setting a precedent and policy for other communities and cities across the nation.

Ground Squirrels Exterminated under City Managers Orders
http://www.surfsantamonica.com/ssm_site/the_lookout/news/News-2006/February-2006/02_13_06_Ground_Squirrels_Exterminated.htm
Under direct orders from the newly hired City manager Lamont Ewell -- and over the objections of animal advocacy groups, a local council member and County Supervisor Zev Yaroslovsky -- City staff gassed hundreds of squirrel burrows in the seaside park with a lethal dose of aluminum phosphide between Monday and Friday of last week.
Sure, let's kill all the squirrels and why don't we just kill all the birds too, while are at it, is that your desire?
Yes, I read the same article as you did. And I'll concede that they're one of the cutest rodents on the planet.
Mosquitos are one of the cutest insects on the planet. Dainty and make a little buzz near your ear. When either become a nuisance, it's good that the city steps up to take action.
Not all, FO but if they are overrunning the parks and creating a health hazard, they should be terminated, yes.
I can't believe you are advocating that we should leave all trashcans open so the squirrels can rummage in them, potentially spreading disease to the homeless and Waste disposal workers. I guess I put human life above that of a rodent. You probably disagree.
Latest on teh Santa Monica squirrels:
Ready for the latest about Santa Monica's war on squirrels?
For Santa Monica's proliferating squirrels, Lefty Ayeers is the grim reaper. For a $19,000 bounty paid by the city, professional exterminator Ayers is trapping squirrels that are overruning popular Palisades Park, which is located above the city's ocean-front beach. Ayers' three traps, baited with feed and chunks of watermelon, have snared 80 squirrels. link Trapped squirrels are euthanized with carbon dioxide (at an undisclosed location), then fed to raptor birds at a wildlife refuge as part of the green city's recycling program. The city was ordered to reduce its squirrel population because of the health hazard posed by rodents infested with fleas, which can carry the bubonic plague. Animal lovers, some of whom feed the squirrels, have criticized the extermination program as cruel.

Liberals only have sympathy for terrorists...
Squirrels have been around for many years and there were no health problems.
All those homeless urinating and defacating all over the place create REAL health hazards.

" Recently, residents on the 1500 block of Euclid St. and neighbors near the intersection of Montana Avenue and Euclid Street fought vest-pocket parks proposed by the city. Is something wrong when citizens dont want parks because they know drunks and vagrants will take over as already has happened with most of our larger green spaces?"
Case in point. Despite complaints, City Hall continues to ramp up services for transients. It just received yet another $804,000 from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to expand programs from two of Santa Monicas largest homeless services agencies (SMDP, Sept. 19, page 1.) Our plethora of handouts and services, when coupled with forgiving judicial and jail systems that guarantee lawbreakers a free ride without sanctions is why Santa Monica is a vagrants paradise and other communities are not.
Our supermarkets and drug stores are gold mines for panhandlers. Emotional complaints of verbal and physical abuse directed at adults and children patronizing them have filled the letters to the editors pages of this newspaper for months.
