LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Mel Gibson received a standing ovation at a preview for his new movie, 'Apocalypto'.
The actor-director - who has kkept a low profile since making anti-Semitic comments and being charged with drink-driving - made a surprise appearance at a screening of the Mayan adventure film at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas on Friday (22.09.06).
Addressing the crowd, Mel drew parallels between the movie's subject matter and today's world saying: "The precursors to a civilization that's going under are the same, time and time again.
"What's human sacrifice if not sending guys off to Iraq for no reason?"
The two hour long version shown at the event was a rough cut of the finished product di not have any sound effects or musical score.
Mel was recently invited to meet with three prominent American Jewish groups, after his apology for making anti-Semitic remarks when he was arrested for drunk driving.
The 'Lethal Weapon' actor's outburst happened as he was being questioned by a California police officer after he was caught speeding through Malibu, California, while under the influence.
The 1939 Club, New York's Museum of Jewish Heritage and a Beverly Hills rabbi have all reached out and asked Mel to meet with them.

Gibson has proven himself to be a real jerk - I hope his "fans" stop defending his nonsense and his insane rantings.
YOu got that right. Buchanan, Michael Moore and Gibson are scum.
Mel is sucking up to the far left because he wants to be "loved" by them - it will backfire. He has made a fool of himself - again.
If he wasn't before, he is now. Gibson has now said something to infuriate pretty much everybody.
I am hesitant to broach the subject, and I want to give Mel the benefit of the doubt, but it makes one wonder. Is he truly antisemitic? Do his statements about Iraq grow out of a deep mistrust of Israel and a real belief that American foreign policy in the Middle East is driven by a Jewish cabal?
Everyone always wonders if those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. No one ever seems to ask if those who remember might be misapplying it today.
Conservatives tend to go overboard in their adulations at times.
I never understood the ga-ga attitude toward Mel Gibson. He has always been anti-war and has never hidden it.
That being said, he is pro-life and is a christian.
I am still just as grateful to him for "The Passion". But he certainly has always had his liberal side.
______________
He is anti war?
What the heck was Braveheart all about?
The glory of fighting for the overall good cause?
Freedom not mercy!

I'm guess....yea!
The intellectual vacuity that equates ritual human sacrifice with defense at risk of one's life is stunning.
It's like equating water, vodka and bleach because they're all clear liquids.
Sometimes a movie is just a movie.
Yes, Mel is anti-war as far as the War on Terror as well as Vietnam.
He's fight the British though. He doesn't like them.
