I think it is pretty rotten the way the situation was handled, especially since Andrew Luster was in Mexico at the time and was probably drugging and raping citizens there. I have never been one to believe conspiracies, but there has got to be more to this.
I think he should be commended instead of arrested. Leland said it best when he said something like, "We didn't take a Mexican citizen, we can and got an American rapists and brought him back to face justice."
Ok no point taken. Dog should have appeared for his hearing in Mexico. He didn't and will have to face his charge there. But in Mexico what he was charged with was( according to that show) a misdemeanor. I don't know if that is correct. If Luster had been raping women in Mexico why would the Mexicans bother to charge him as he is going to spend a long time in jail here in the USA. I don't think a misdemeanor should be an extraditable crime to Mexico. But that of course is just my opinion. I think there are more people who have committed worse crimes then the Chapmans to extradite.
Heres some links I went to make sure I wasn't just getting my info from a bail jumper on TV.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Luster In this one it says there was GHB in his room which is also called the date rape drug. So why did he have it?
Having known for years of the deep corruption at every level of the Mexican judicial system, and watching the Mexican government openly and daily flout our immigration laws, I have a low opinion of their government in general. (And it's difficult emotionally to always take the high road when our enemies profit, often at our expense, by taking the low one. But I realize I shouldn't let that emotion interfere with my thinking.)
However, I'm willing to be proven wrong about my expectation of injustice where the Chapmans are concerned. And I certainly want to believe what you say about them being safe in a Mexican prison should it come to that. If their fame will make that happen, then good. I'll await developments with interest.
By the way, in my research today I read that an NBC affiliate has reported that the decision about whether to extradite the Chapmans to Mexico will be made by Condoleezza Rice. It was just a one-sentence statement, and the affiliate wasn't identified, so I don't know how accurate it is.
And for the record, I'm not among the posters who've accused you of a pro-Luster bias. (I believe you know that.)
I saw it. Very informative. What's boggling me right now is the fact that Dog and his crew met with local Mexican authorities and they helped hin get Luster. After aiding them, they arrested him. It just doesn't make much sense.
I agree with you. 87 counts in America that were reported. I wonder how many were not reported. I'm sure he has done the same thing in Mexico, but nobody talks about it because the women don't even know what happened.
You make a good point about extraditing on a misdemeanor. According to the Extradition treaty we have with Mexico, the act must be a crime in both countries and punishable for more than 1 year in jail. Either party has the option to say "No, we won't extradite" if they choose to do so.
What's boggling me right now is the fact that Dog and his crew met with local Mexican authorities and they helped hin get Luster. After aiding them, they arrested him. It just doesn't make much sense.
I was thinking the very same thing. From what my mother in law who winters in Mexico says its a very corrupt system and had Dog paid them off he wouldn't have been charged. But who knows. I am just glad Luster was caught and brought back here to do his time. What he did was disgusting and he needs to be in jail. He must be a very sick pervert to drug, rape and video tape those poor women.
Can we send Paris Hilton over instead of Dog???
That's "hot".
Wastin away again in Margaritaville....
lookin for my show's new plot.
Some people say that there's a Dog to blame,
but I know...
It's Fox's damn fault.
Let Mexico have Cindy Sheehan too. I'm sure we could find a bunch of other people to send too. lol
I think you are right about who makes the decision. I had thought it was a court, but the court is involved only regarding whether the warrant is servable, not the final decision, and they already went to that court.
So we could lobby the state department to stop the extradition, and I think anybody who is upset with this SHOULD call the state department -- I'd be happy if he WASN'T extradited, I just think we need to follow procedure.
I am only "hopeful" that nothing will happen to him. I do realise Mexico is not exactly a first-class country, and it bothers me that in defending the rule of law I'm also having to live with defending Mexico, which I don't want to do.
For every Chapman, I bet there are a dozen others who go through this process and AREN'T celebrities and who knows what happens to them.
Thanks for the links. The first one indicates he had a book with his victim's names, which I do not dispute but isn't itself indicative of crimes IN mexico.
The "mexican pickup lines" could be nothing more than that he wanted to still sleep with women. It doesn't mean he was raping them.
The Wikipedia entry about finding GHB in his hotel is a more serious thing. But I couldn't find any link to a news story that corroberated that charge, so I discounted it. I'm not saying it isn't true, just that I can't find a source for it (Wikipedia of course is not a source for anything).
I'm sorry that my previous post sounded accusatory or demeaning. It wasn't my intent, I should be more careful in my choice of words.
No problem. I think Dog as a bail bonds man and bounty hunter he should have showed up for his Mexican hearing. It has also crossed my mind this could be a publicity stunt of some kind. I hope not but I don't trust tv. Just so you know I don't really watch that show . lol
My, my, aren't we righteous. You can't see a set-up right in front of your face?
Chapman said a Mexican policeman helped him with the collar. If bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico, the policeman should have told him, and the policeman should also be facing charges.
Let's hope you never have a misunderstanding with a police officer and try to explain yourself and end up "resisting arrest." It's a slippery slope that can happen to anyone.
Are you out of your mind?
From 6 Aug AP..."The bounty hunter who captured convicted rapist Andrew Luster in Mexico won't receive any of the $1 million bail the fugitive Max Factor heir forfeited when he vanished during his trial, a judge ruled. Bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman was not entitled to any share of the money because he was acting on his own and not as a legally authorized bail recovery agent when he snatched Luster off a street in Puerto Vallarta on June 18, Superior Court Judge Edward Brodie ruled Tuesday.". It further states..."Chapman, his son and brother were charged by Mexican authorities with illegally capturing Luster. The three, who were arrested with the fugitive after passers-by reported a scuffle, returned to the United States after posting bail of their own." Reading further ""He went to Mexico and failed to comply with the law. I cannot condone vigilante justice," Brodie said of Chapman. The law requires that bounty hunters have a formal agreement with the bail bond agent or law enforcement, have a clean criminal record and follow local laws when they search for felons. Bounty hunting is considered a crime in Mexico."
Chapman went to Mexico for two reasons...Money and publicity. He got instead the publicity and arrested then proceeded to jump bail. The only real ending to this would have been another bounty hunter making the collar of Chapman and sons and televising the video...guess you could have called the show "Dog Catcher".
Dog didn't go to the hearing because he got legal advise telling him to leave the country and that he could not, by law, be extradicted on this misdemeaner charge. I think when he goes to the extradiction hearing, the courts will see this as unconstitutional and deny the extradition. (I hope so).
Back in 2003 it was reported that they grabbed Luster when he was eating tacos, and the vendor thought that it was a kidnapping so he called the police. The cops caught up with them when they were in their way to the airport.
"I didn't know if it was a kidnapping or a movie," said Alberto Franco, 26, who was working at the gas station across the street.
Taco stand worker Giovanni Balbuena said the bounty hunters threatened Luster with tear gas, wrestled what appeared to be handcuffs on him and drove away in two cars. Franco said taxi drivers notified local police.
Police caught up with the fleeing cars about 2½ miles northwest of town and arrested the lot, according to Zavala.
They never claimed that they met with mexican police before attempting to catch Luster, indeed, his defense before the judge in Mexico was that "we came here as tourists (with two cameramen, mind you) and then we saw Luster and we took our chance", so if they said that in the show, that means they changed their version again.
If you watched the A&E special, you wouldv'e seen from the footage of the capture, the Policia did work with dog.
I watched the A&E show, heard Rita Crosby talk , and tried to find as many links as I could before my PTO meeting. I am not sure what the whole REAL story is. Just as I don't know if some of this is just for his show. But in my opinion I don't think the Chapmans should be extradited, most people that I've heard talk abouut it feel the same. I think its wonderful Luster was caught and now in prison. I am listening to a replay of the show as I type this and it says the Mexican police found video tapes , a notebook of names he wanted to get revenge on and date rape drugs. Which claim are you referring to by the way?
