Love songs to get you in the mood

Ah, romantic musical moments. Who hasn't heard a song on the radio which has reminded them of "that moment" in time when they fell in love, had their first dance, got married or experienced something monumental (first kiss, first shag, first breakup)? Who hasn't put in their favorite CD and gotten all misty-eyed thinking about the one they love? (Or the one who broke their heart!)

As Beethoven once said, "Music should strike fire from the heart of man, and bring tears from the eyes of woman." And it seems a gamut of modern men know the power of this statement all too well.

Take country singer Keith Urban, who serenaded new wife Nicole Kidman with an acoustic rendition of his song, Making Memories of Us at their wedding ceremony. (Apparently there wasn't a dry eye in the house.)

Then there was Eric Clapton's romantic song Layla, dedicated to the woman he fell hopelessly in love with - Model Pattie Boyd, who was the wife of his then best friend George Harrison. (And it worked like a charm. Clapton later married Boyd and they were together for nine years.)

And supermodel Heidi Klum claims there's nothing more romantic than having hubby Seal serenade her one of his songs. (Who can blame her?)

"I'd be surprised if someone said that music doesn't play a large part in their life," writes blogger Chris in an email to me, suggesting the topic (among many others). "For me at least, there are those moments when a song comes on the radio that takes you to a specific moment in your life that you'll never forget, or remind you of someone you'll never forget - or perhaps someone you'd rather forget." Indeed.

As one budding Casanova tells me, "My girlfriend and I have a comprehensive list of songs that we listen to. When we broke up recently, I put nine songs onto a CD for her, each one describing how I felt. I knew it would get her emotions going; she'd cry and miss me and want me back." So did it work? "Of course it did! Our songs get her going every time."

So what were his song choices? (Gents, take note!) Goodbye My Lover by James Blunt (heaven to any girl's ears), Listen to your heart by DHT (acoustic version), Even When I'm Sleeping by Leonardo's Bride, How Do I live Without You by LeAnne Rimes and I Don't Want To Miss a Thing by Aerosmith. (Romantic gesture? Or a little too soppy?)

Then there's the Lothario who often finds himself single, again. So now every time he dumps a girl he plays his top ten "feel-good" songs to help him get over the breakup. "I pump up the songs and I always feel much better. Among my favourites are Wish You Well by Bernard Fanning, Had a Bay Day by Daniel Powter, Never Again by Milk Inc, Hallelujah by Bryan Adams and Shake It Off by Mariah Carey."

To me, songs have that magic power that cannot be explained in words. (I once dated a bloke who introduced me to Just Jinger's romantic ballad Shallow Waters, tear-jerking stuff. And who can go past Celine Dion's The Power Of Love? Cheesy I know, but you can't deny it hits the spot everytime.)

As Chris notes, it's not just merely a memory that comes flooding back. "Sometimes its enough to warm up your cheeks, put a smile on your face the size of the Great Wall of China for the entire day and have you bouncing off the walls; or for the sappy types, send you into an uncontrollable fit of sadness complete with a flow of tears that would make Niagara Falls look like a meagre trickle of water."

And as I've heard many-a-friend say: that was "our song".

Nightwish - Sleeping Sun

The sun is sleeping quietly
Once upon a century
Wistful oceans calm and red
Ardent caresses laid to rest

For my dreams I hold my life
For wishes I behold my night
The truth at the end of time
Losing faith makes a crime

I wish for this night-time
to last for a lifetime
The darkness around me
Shores of a solar sea
Oh how I wish to go down with the sun
Sleeping
Weeping
With you

Sorrow has a human heart
From my god it will depart
I'd sail before a thousand moons
Never finding where to go

Two hundred twenty-two days of light
Will be desired by a night
A moment for the poet's play
Until there's nothing left to say

I wish for this night-time
to last for a lifetime
The darkness around me
Shores of a solar sea
Oh how I wish to go down with the sun
Sleeping
Weeping
With you

I wish for this night-time
to last for a lifetime
The darkness around me
Shores of a solar sea
Oh how I wish to go down with the sun
Sleeping
Weeping
With you

Nightwish - Sleepwalker
From the album "Over The Hill And Far Away"

Close your eyes
Feel the ocean where passion lies
Silently the senses
Abandon all defences

A place between
sleep and awake
End of innocence, unending masquerade
That's where I'll wait for you

Hold me near you
So close I sear you
Seeing, believing
Dreaming, decieving

A place between
sleep and awake
End of innocence, unending masquerade
That's where I'll wait for you

Sleepwalker seducing me
I dare to enter your ecstacy
Lay yourself now down to sleep
In my dreams you're mine to keep

Sleepwalker..

Sleepwalker..

(Sleepwalk with me...)

Sleepwalker seducing me
I dare to enter your ecstacy
Lay yourself now down to sleep
In my dreams you're mine... to... keep

Nobody's mentioned "Why Don't We Do It In The Road".Well,I guess that's a classic from an earlier, more innocent, era.
