TORONTO (CP) - Tell these feisty chicks to "shut up and sing" and they'll make a movie.
The Dixie Chicks have rebounded from death threats, stinging political attacks and radio station battles with "Shut Up and Sing," a moving documentary that debuted this week at the Toronto International Film Festival.
It was three years ago that front woman Natalie Maines told a London audience that the Texas band was embarrassed U.S. President George W. Bush was from their home state.
Since then, the trio has weathered a firestorm of controversy to create a new album, discover new fans, have a couple of babies and embark on a new tour. But Maines said Wednesday she has not changed her tune about the president.
"Everything that has happened since then is more of a disgrace and watching all the footage from Hurricane Katrina is unbelievable," Maines told a packed news conference as cameras snapped shots of her and bandmates Martie Maguire and Emily Robison.
"He has been a disaster."
In fact, the touching film not only repeats her controversial statement but adds fuel to the fire with yet another expletive-laden slam that Maines admits made her pause once she realized it had been caught on camera.
"I was being myself and that's what a documentary is about," Maines said of the scene.
"When I first saw that I kind of went, 'Uhnhh!,"' she said, as if gasping for air. "But I don't think at this stage I'm pissing off any new people."
The diminutive blond drew no ire from enthusiastic audiences that screened the film during the festival. An early press screening Monday drew spontaneous applause and laughter, while a ritzy gala screening ended with a standing ovation.
The film, directed by Oscar-winner Barbara Kopple with Cecilia Peck, daughter of late film legend Gregory Peck, drew its most ardent approval in one scene where the band's handlers propose dropping U.S. cities from a poor-selling tour and adding Canadian ones instead.
"Kamloops, Moose Jaw.... Any town with a hockey arena," one suggests in the film as hoots of approval emerge from the audience.
Maines said Wednesday the band has a new appreciation for Canadian fans, who stood by the country trio while others in the United States tossed CDs in the trash at the behest of a right-wing campaign.
"Yes, thank God for Canada," said Maines, noting the band found political support from countries around the world. "It's a little surprising that the U.S. hasn't necessarily caught on yet."
"It was encouraging to have the premiere of this film in a country where what happened to the Dixie Chicks could never happen here," added Peck, repeating comments made at the gala screening earlier in the week.

needs some attention! ;)
Too bad for them that Internet poll numbers don't translate into money.
Maines is part of a strain spoiled rich party(recreation) people. They have been relieved of the life's responsibility. Other people are hired to do the family life for them. The never write a check, slide a debit card, cook a meal, turn down a sheet, take the children to the doctor, attend a parent teacher conference or read a book. The only work they perform is mixing bloody Marys on the butler's day off. Why should the regular people pay any mind to what they say? Why should the media even pass their messages?
A prime product of public screwls. She has a long way to go to know what it means to "get it".
What "happened to the Dixie Chicks"? People stopped buying their records and concert tickets. We don't have a right to do that?
And had to cancel many of the US dates b/c not enough Americans were stupid enough to pay their hard-earned money for tickets.
"Everything that has happened since then is more of a disgrace..." Maines (said)
Like her big mouth and her slumping CD sales?! The diminutive blond ...
Was this journalist wearing those thinning glasses? Maybe rose coloured by chance?
If her tour bus goes off a cliff, I will be quite content.
No, gnatilly, you's hasn't, and you's probably never will.
I bet the first time it had something to do with Rosie O'Donald. Because her occupation is called comedian, she gets extra license. "It's joke, Son." is the attitude of her water carriers. I don't buy it. She is sitting at panel of people having a serious discussion.
Rosie is another fine example of the product of public screwls.
Just keep on Natalie....sorry you're too stoopid to realize that big mouth of yours isn't getting you anywhere but cancelled dates and low album sales. I love it, so you just keep on yappin'.
Yes, but which part of Canada? You'd be liked to be booed and jeered in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba because those Canadians don't like the Left-leaning folks in the eastern provinces.
Probably the chief reason for failure of AirAmerica is inability of the radio stations to find sponsors to advertise products and service to an audience that doesn't believe in free enterprise.
Well it has certainly got my STOMACH moving... :(
my bowels as well! LOL
She was on Oprah and now Larry King. She thinks only her opinion counts. Natalie, the world will soon learn what a snot you are... if they can not see it already.
