All you need to know for Week 1

No one knows how much longer Bill Parcells plans to coach the Dallas Cowboys.

However, outsiders believe that the addition of Terrell Owens will eventually lead to locker-room turmoil, like it did in Philadelphia and that such a distraction will push the legendary coach out the door.

Nobody really knows. Nobody really can predict how T.O. will handle himself this season.

But there is no doubt that Parcells, now 65, has made a sincere effort to make peace with some of his old coaches like Bill Belichick. Those two parted on ugly terms when Belichick refused to remain with the New York Jets, instead accepting an offer from New England owner Bob Kraft to coach the Patriots. We all remember that Parcells did not leave Kraft on good terms when he jumped to the Jets, costing that franchise numerous high draft picks.

Parcells wasn't always the best buddy of his assistant coaches, but even some of that has changed. Whenever he leaves the game, Parcells wants to know he has more friends than enemies out there and that he appreciated their hard work. It's a natural expectation for anyone who knows his career only has a few more years left.

When the two of us parted in Oxnard last month, Parcells made some crack about "the two us fooling everybody for quite a long time."

Personally, I don't think Parcells has been fooling anyone. He's worked hard and always had a vision for his football teams. He may have bounced around, looking for more money and more control, but isn't that the American way?

Long-lost siblings?

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Long-lost siblings?

That's a daunting prospect; just imagine these two vying for parental attention.

Parcells is a quitter who has a history of quitting on his teams. When he decided to leave New England, it was ugly, as New England was on a Super Bowl run. As New England got deeper into the playoffs, Parcells was consumed with getting the hell out of town. So instead of focusing on getting his team ready for the big game (Super Bowl), he was busy negotiating (against NFL rules) a deal with the NY Jets.

Parcells hatred for Bob Kraft was evidently so deep that he didn't seem to mind watching distractedly from the sidelines as his team got trounced by Green Bay in the big game. After the game, Parcells was through. He didn't even ride back to New England with the team, instead jetting to New York on a private plane to get started with the Jets.

Parcells repeated this same kind of bizarre behavior in his other stints as head coach. And while Parcells has had some success, it should be noted that he has never been to a Super Bowl without having Bill Belichick running his defense for him (and his two Super Bowl victories with the NY Giants were won by Belichick's defense). However, Bill Belichick has won THREE Super Bowls without Parcells.

Some will retort to these comments by pointing out that Bill Belichick "quitted" on the NY Jets. But those who think that do not know the whole story. The fact is, when Parcells "resigned" from the NY Jets and had Belichick appointed head coach, it was a sham. For Parcells fully intended to stay with the Jets as a "consultant" and thus Belichick was once again being asked to play second fiddle to Parcells. It was obvious that the Jets were going nowhere and Parcells, in an effort to save face, was willing to throw Belichick under the bus and put himself in a win-win situation.

For if Belichick turned the team around, Parcells could take credit as being the man behind the curtain making the REAL decsions. But if the team continued to flounder, it would be Belichick taking the heat and then after a year or two, Belichick would get canned, and Parcells would move back in as "the savior" with a few good draft picks to build upon.

SO Belichick got sick of being in Bill Parcells shadow. He wanted to be his own man and he wasn't going to be that in New York. So when Bob Kraft gave him that opportunity up in New England, who can blame Belichick for resigning as "HC of the NYJ."

Parcells is just a loud-mouthed bully who has ridden the coattails of other men. Belichick is the real deal.

Terry Owens is a cancer. He and Bledsoe will hate each other. Parcells, the quarterback and receiver coaches will hate having him on the team. The other receivers will hate having him on the team.
Parcells will lose patience and give a "him or me" ultimatum. No guess as to which way that will go.
Anyway, better luck next year Cowboy fans.

Parcells is an interesting study. He has almost quit on this team too, but instead, managed to get a pay raise and contract extension. When he showed up here, he was received as the football messiah, who would surely lead Dallas back to the promised land immediately. The media still contorts themselves in press conferences with such genuflecting that I worry about serious collective injury from the strain.

I'm undecided on him personally. I believe that he is a master manipulator, obsessive, and given to bouts of depression. But he inherited a horrid team here three years ago, and now has assembled a club that will can compete with anybody the league. The hallmark of this team is a defense that has the potential to dominate a game. He built the defense almost exclusively in the draft and installing a new scheme, while assembling the offense through the draft and acquiring "his" guys in free agency.

Is he a genius, or just a con man who rode the coattails of Bellichek? I'm not certain, really. But if he can return Dallas to the big one, he will have earned accolades. He would tell you that he isn't concerned with talk of how he can't do this without Bellichek but I think that's part of what makes him tick. I can assure you, though, that betwixt him and Jerry Jones, it's never boring 'round here.

Don't forget that Belichick's contract stated he could only leave the Jets for another NFL head coaching job. When Parcells found out that Kraft was interested in Belichick he saw his resigning as a way to block it.

The only way this thing with Owens works is if the team wins. And likely then for a year, possibly two. If he starts causing real trouble(not trumped up media crap), he'll be shown the door and won't be paid either. (Dallas inserted certain conduct clauses that will permit such a release.)

I've often wondered how Parcells was treated in the Northeast. Was he afforded iconic status up there as he enjoys here? It's really quite odd because the media here normally loves to criticize, even torture the HC of the Cowboys. They practically ran Chan Gailey right out of the NFL!

"(Dallas inserted certain conduct clauses that will permit such a release.)" Very wise move. Still believe you all are in for a rough year. Owens is what he is. It is his nature to be a jerk. Good luck.

Oh he was highly praised when he was the Pats head coach and for good reason.

The Cowboys have had zero direction for too many years. If you look at the team Bill inherited and the one he has built today you will see Bill has built something that can contend for the SB. The defense has a chance to be the best in the league and the offense is solid. Bledsoe is a better than average QB with the ability to be great. Glenn is really solid and the Witten is one of the top 5 TE's in the league. If TO holds up the Cowboys should win the division, if not Bill needs to cut him fast. I think keeping Keyshawn would have been a smarter move than getting TO, but Jerry wants to sell jerseys.

No matter what Bill does in the next couple of years the Cowboys have a defense to dominate for years to come, a solid QB in Romo to replace Bledsoe. They can draft OL and WR in the next couple of drafts and be dominate.

The Cowboys and Parcells remind me a bit of the Seahawks in that they have been building a team to last, that has been up and down while the pieces were coming together.

I say since the Giants have such a brutal schedule I could see Dallas at Seattle in the NFC title game this year.

I agree with most everything you said, and I do like Keyshawn, but the thing is that Owens can change the outcome of a game singularly by either taking a short catch all the way, or drawing double teams, and freeing up a very underrated Terry Glenn against one defender.

In terms of the long-term prospects, I only worry about replacing TG/TO on the outside. No doubt, the defense here should be awesome for several years.

Best coach in the game. Three Super Bowl wins, with 3 different quarterbacks and no name running backs.

I can't wait for the day when he and TO are both gone. It would be nice to get rid of the Jones family too, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

Not from me. If he builds a lasting team, then he'll earn them. I don't care for his version of a team talent pool.
