Week Two College Football
Week One finally brought some much needed intensity to the summertime months for most of us. It was a relief for some (Ohio State, Notre Dame) and a crushing time for others (Colorado and Cal especially). Now that weve seen most every team in action, now we have something to go on other than perceptions when making picks.
As always, all rankings are from the ESPN.com Scoreboard page. I will also list any games of interest (FReepmail me if you want your team included and I will include them from here on out) and any other games listed in my Yahoo league.
GAME of the WEEK
Saturday, September 9th, 2006
(1) Ohio State at (2) Texas (-2.5)
Ohio States offense is fine. Their defense remains a question mark. Texas looked ok on offense and their defense is seemingly solid. Might we have another #1 after this week? Yes, probably. While there was quite a bit of holding in the Northern Illinois game, there was more of an issue of the Ohio State defenders getting off of blocks and making tackles. Now sure Garrett Wolfe would PROBABLY start on a team like Texas (hes that good), NIU doesnt have the offensive line that Texas does. Going into a hostile environment with a young and unproven defense isnt quite as bit a hinderance as going in with a young and unproven offense, but Texas as a relatively experienced offense, just a redshirt freshman QB. Assuming he makes no mistakes, which is a hard thing to do in a game like this, Texas will win outright. Ohio States offense wont make very many mistakes either, but their defense is the major question mark of this game.
Ohio State 25 Texas 22
Thursday September 7th, 2006 (ESPN Thursday Night Game)
Oregon State at Boise State (-8)
This game should be a shootout. Neither team is especially known for defense. And we get to see that horrible blue turf they have in Boise very early this year.

Who did FSU beat (the snot out of)?? :)
All I know, besides LSU absolutely destroying Arizona, is that my pick'em team got killed by underachieving favorites today. What's up with FSU? And how does Syracuse get Iowa into double OT?! Thank God for the SEC, or I'd be under .500 this week.
FSU lost once that year....late in the season to UF. Germaine was the man at OSU. Those were the good old days.
Did not want to throw that out after OSU's big win tonight as an OSU/USC BCS championship game is a possibility this year....its early though. The SEC will beat the heck out of itself, ND also has a tough road.
Mark ny words, neither FSU nor Miami will make it to the ACC Championship game this year.
FSU made it w/ four losses last year....you play us in Tallahassee this year.
FSU has no chance with that lethargic running game. They've got a defense that will keep them in most games, but that offense stinks.
If Ron Zook could win in Tally, Meyer should have no problem. (Now we just have to figure out how to beat Tennessee...and LSU....and Auburn....and Georgia....UNGGH!)
I haven't been to Doak in years, but I hear there are anti-JB signs at each game and the pressure is increasingly visible.
Its sad, I kept hoping for them to break out of it last year & they didn't. More of the same and Weatherford will get killed if they don't.
(Now we just have to figure out how to beat Tennessee...and LSU....and Auburn....and Georgia....UNGGH!)
That's our advantage, UF has a hell of a lot tougher conference schedule than we do. this season was a gift to FSU.....dump Jeff and take advantage of it.
I think you might be right about McCoy. Ohio State won this won without any doubts. What won it IMO opinion was not running out the clock right before the half after Texas scored. That TD drive took the Big MO Texas would have had going into the half right out of our hands and right back with Ohio State. Good coaching move right there.
I'll stand by this prediction that whomever goes to the BCS bowl will not be undeafeted. You guys, Norte Dame, Auburn, USC have potential tough ones on the schedule and you never know which way rivalary games could go (IE Michigan vs OSU) Could we meat again in Glendale, Ariz on Jan 8th? Could if the right things happen.
Actually that is not quite true. You can see the future schedules up till 2011 on the UT website and they have UCLA, Arkansas, and TCU scheduled which are from respecatable conferences and have possiblites for being Top 25 material. Granted they have Rice, UTEP and Central Florida there too, but oh well.
I think the latter is the case.
I'm sure it didn't make Cal feel better that Air Force gave the Vols a much tougher outing.
"Makes one wonder if Texas at this point is really the #2 team. I think that USC has reloaded better than Texas at this point." As someone still smarting over last year's heatbreaking loss in the BCS championship, I must admit to schadenfraude that the Longhorn's reign was short-lived. Vince Young brought them to the dance and then left them in the dust. That said, I honestly didn't think USC would be where it is this year and I'd be much more comfortable if they were a bit lower in the standings. I am impressed with how they have done considering the loss of Leinart, Bush and White. But they haven't really been tested yet. Nebraska will be tough and Notre Dame will be out for revenge... I'm just thrilled that they are in contention for the fourth year in a row. It occurred to me that, had we been going by the new clock rules last year, USC would probably have beaten the Longhorns last year. Then again, they would have lost to Notre Dame, so they wouldn't have been in the BCS championship anyway.....
Easily? No. Texas put up a whale of a fight. But Ohio State did win decisively and you're right, there is no doubt who number 1 is. The question will be who is number 2 and how far Texas will fall in the rankings.
FSU spent all of last year playing down to the level of their competition, a bad habit to get into. It's still early in the season, but so far it looks like they haven't kicked that habit yet.
I don't know about that. I would have agreed before for the performance Penn State gave at Note Dame. But now I think that game exposed a lot of holes in the Penn State team that Ohio State can exploit.
yeah, but they did smack Minny around a bit.
Surprisingly enough.
Sure....
However, I think JoePA is going to get that team rolling against Youngstown St. next week.
