"I'm sure it didn't make Cal feel better that Air Force gave the Vols a much tougher outing." I don't know why it took me so long to figure out why the academy teams never do well. It finally hit me last night -- DUH! Academy teams are made up of real cadets with the same rigourous schedules and academic expectations that their classmates have. Football really is just a side activity to them -- not the thing around which everything else revolves the way it is for other college football teams. They go to the academy knowing that the military is their career. Anyone with aspirations of going pro isn't likely to be at the academies.
