Kirk, Spock leave fans beaming

Their partnership anchored a TV cult phenomenon and inspired films, parodies, even a genre of homoerotic fiction.

Capt. James Tiberius Kirk and Spock, or rather the actors who played them, were welcomed to Toronto like gods yesterday on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the first televised episode of Star Trek.

A sold-out crowd of 500 trekkies at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre gave William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy a standing ovation as the men made a lively joint appearance, their first together in Canada.

Of all the things that were ever broadcast, the original Star Trek resonated because it went beyond entertainment. The show presented a future that grappled with timeless philosophical and metaphysical questions and situations that were definitely...fascinating.

CBS is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Star Trek by re-broadcasting the original episodes starting September 17, Sunday. So set your TIVOs or PC-VCRs on stun!

Its been a long voyage... and it turned the two actors into life-long friends and made the show a pop phenomenon. Live Long And Prosper!

Shatner was born in Canada, so this is a sort of coming for him. His first acting gig was at Stratford in Ontario, where he played understudy to Christopher Plummer. Little did they know then, that decades later, they would star in a Star Trek movie!

Quip Of The Day:

"What is your greatest accomplishment so far?" Shatner asked his partner, echoing a question from the audience.

"I think it's managing to get along with you," Nimoy deadpanned.

An unlikely duo as we'll ever see in this life. Thanks for the memories, Bill and Leonard. You've made the past 40 years special for all of us!

It WAS originally proposed to CBS, which took a pass. There's a joke in there somewhere that only Star Trek fans can savor. After 40 years, people still love the show. I've never seen anything seen quite like it in the history of Hollywood. Its a legend.

Speaking of plummers, the original Klingons seemed more appealing because they resembled grease smeared plumbers or grease monkeys (to be politically correct, grease macacas...)

Google Leonard Nimoy and check out the photography site. Is this the same Nimoy as Mr. Spock?

even a genre of homoerotic fiction.

If that doesn't make you hurl nothing will. Of course, just the reporter knowing this tells you a lot.

Comedy Central supposedly has a pretty good roast of Shatner airing. If I wasn't convinced he drowned his wife, I might watch it.

If the reporter was at a ST con, there's no way the reporter could AVOID the "slash" fiction about Kirk/Spock!
