Inside Microsoft Windows Vista Release Candidate 1
PC Magazine / ABC News ^ | September 2, 2006 | John Clyman

It's been a long time coming, but Windows Vista Release Candidate 1 is finally here. As Microsoft starts to collect feedback from a broad spectrum of users in one of its largest test programs ever, the company will soon be in a position to decide whether the product is solid enough to meet announced ship dates of November for enterprise customers and January 2007 for consumers.

Earlier this week, I started using Vista build 5568, a version that Microsoft says should be virtually indistinguishable from the actual RC1 code. Since recent Vista revisions have been focusing on improving performance, compatibility, and stability rather than adding features, there's not a lot to highlight that's truly new. Instead, I've compiled a walkthrough of 100 screen shots recapping what Vista looks like from top to bottom.

The most pressing question for RC1 is whether it shows that Vista is good enough to ship. In my experience so far, it's getting a lot closer, but it's not quite there yet.

Yes folks,he's back!

Heh.   Actually, that was a parody I did back in early August of 2005.   Just a little blast from the past, as it were.   :o)

or you can always by a crapple macintrash...

we are so trendy with our commercials, too bad no one buys our junk...

Actually, I bought a Mac Mini not long after Apple rolled them out (circa April, 2005). The price was right (~$600) and the processing power was respectable. I snagged one and have been having quite a bit of fun with it ever since. I'm thinking of picking up an Intel edition sometime soon, too.

If Apple keeps doing sharp things like they did with the Mac Mini, they won't have any problem whipping the pants off of Microsloth in the years to come.

Ah geez, I just built a new computer and bought a full retail version of XP Pro for it.

When is Vista supposed to officially be released? And how long before it actually works? And how much more is it going to cost me?

CP/M-80 was certainly better than MS-DOS, back when both were available. Legend has it that IBM chose MS-DOS for its PCs on the theory that Bill Gates would be easier to steamroll...

"And what will this do that XP won't do? I think I'll pass."
And what will this do that LINUX won't do? I think I'll pass.
And what will this do that a MAC won't do? I think I'll pass.

Vista will handle more memory than XP can can and you can use Direct X 10, also multiprocessors

This is Windows so it has Flash 9 support something Linux doesn't have... Among other things..

This will run games out of the box Mac OSX you need extra software..

" Vista will handle more memory than XP can can and you can use Direct X 10, also multiprocessors"

Does that mean the multiprocessor 64 bit Linux I've been running the last year for free is no good?

"This is Windows so it has Flash 9 support something Linux doesn't have... Among other things.."

Truthfully, I don't know what Flash 9 is, so haven't missed it.

"This will run games out of the box Mac OSX you need extra software.."

Unfortunately, I don't play games on the computer, or this would be valuable to me.

Doesn't matter. Linux will have Flash 9 before Vista is available to the GP next year (Not that I use it all that much anyway).

Just stating that it has more capabilities than WinXP as far as multiprocessors go.

I use Linux, PCLinuxOS and Mepis if you dont believe me you can look at my blog, www.linuxpapers.blogspot.com

Will the TV functionality of my ATI X800XT ALL-IN-WONDER ever work in Linux?
