We live, as the pundits say, in the United States of Amnesia. Even so, did the makers of "The U.S. vs. John Lennon," an inquiry into our government's bizarre attempt to neutralize the perceived political juice of that famed English singer-songwriter, really need to spend half the movie explaining the Vietnam War and the anti-war movement to viewers? If things are really that bad, then perhaps the filmmakers should explain who John Lennon is. After all, the Beatles date back over 40 years.
For those who do remember or are aware of the zeitgeist of the counterculture, this lengthy regurgitation of well-known history mars an otherwise interesting probe into a strange sidebar of the Nixon administration's attempt to suppress those who publicly challenged its failed military and political strategies in Vietnam. For those who do need to be brought up to speed, writer-producer-directors David Leaf and John Scheinfeld throw in too many subjects -- from the rise of the Black Panthers to Watergate -- without sufficient sociopolitical context. A newcomer would indeed get lost.
The guts of the matter, the administration's failed effort to deport Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono -- presumably in the delusional belief that one of the world's most famous individuals would go unnoticed if returned to his native soil -- is fascinating. Especially so in light of our current administration's fetish for spying on Americans without warrants and vitriolic attempts to silence critics by questioning their patriotism or intestinal fortitude. ...

As I sit through the beginning of the preview I get annoyed and say to my lovely fiance that they will tie this into Iraq in any minute, then just like clockwork we have the mention of Bush. Thought this would be of interest if you'd like to get annoyed, watch the preview
John Lennon would never have gone back to England anyhow. The taxes were too high. And we all know how liberals feel about taxes. They love taxes when it is other people paying them.
Wow did the queer save the world? He does in about 99% of the sewer garbage fed to the general public!
Once again look at the communist goals [From "The Naked Communist," by Cleon Skousen].
21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.
24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.
25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.
26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."
We will not tolerate intolerance!!!!
Its to the point where every movie has at least one. Last time I checked, in a movie with 10 characters, statistically only one third of a single character should be "gay". But you know whe have to show that they are just like everyone else. Nothing different here
I would doubt it, but I have no idea. I wasn't around when John was acting up.
This man protested on American soil alongside Communists urging peace against Nazi Germany. So much for "killing fascists" with that guitar, commie.
YES the public DOES need to educated about the REALITY of the Vietnam war protesters and the rights of this nation to prevent unwanted non-citizens from rising up against it.
And it is STILL the Commies today who protest against American wars on American soil.
That is exactly the point. Where there asians (from China, Japan, India, and Thailand) also in the cast? How about hispanic people (from Cuba, Spain, Peru, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Columbia)?
Diversity is a crock. It is political re-education. People are lumped together who have no common identity and are never genuinely represented in the media.
Jane Fonda said that we would all like Communism if we'd just give it a try, Marlon Brando and others carried around Mao's Little Red Book.
This wasn't a "peace" movement. It was a pro-Communism movement full of seditious bastards who firebombed police cars, armories, military bases, and universities. John Kerry's group plotted to assassinate members of Congress.
THIS is the reality of their so-called peace movement.
Rock and Roll PING! email Weegee to get on/off this list (or < A HREF="http://www.freerepublic.com/~weegee/">grab it< /A> yourself to PING the rest)
This one seems to need a "barf alert"
yeah, it did need one. I shouldve added in the title.
Yes such find bootlicking pro-dictator critics as Cindy Sheehan. A woman who conveniently ignores her previous face to face meeting with President Bush. A woman who has said that she would've hit her son with their family vehicle to prevent him being sent to Iraq.
And Natelie Maines, the "why should anyone have to love this country" anti-patriot singer.
And Michael Moore, "they are freedom fighters" "and they will WIN"...
I querstion the intellectual maturity of this writer.
There is a BIG problem coming, the sooner the loons stop ignoring it the better off we will all be.
Observing the events of todaythe hesitation and uncertainty, the stubborn clinging to the fantasy that the enemy can be appeased if we just keep talking and find the right diplomatic solutionI now feel that, for the first time, I really understand the leaders of the 1930s. Their illusion that Hitler could be appeased has always seemed, in historical hindsight, to be such a willful evasion of the facts that I have never grasped how it was possible for those men to deceive themselves. But I can now see how they clung to their evasions because they could not imagine anything worse than a return to the mass slaughter of the First World War. They wanted to believe that something, anything could prevent a return to war. What they refused to imagine is that, in trying to avoid the horrors of the previous war, they were allowing Hitler to unleash the much greater horrors of a new war.
Today's leaders and commentators have less excuse. The "horror" they are afraid of repeating is the insurgency we're fighting in Iraqa war whose cost in lives, dollars, and resolve is among the smallest America has ever had to pay. And it takes no great feat of imagination to project how much more horrible the coming conflict will be if we wait on events long enough for Iran to arm itself with nuclear technology. Among the horrific consequences is the specter of a new Holocaust, courtesy of an Iranian nuclear bomb.
Stop worrying about offending some folks at the expense of the safety of the nation.
The media is upset because Time Magazine (and maybe others) have reporters in contact with Al Qaeda and they don't want to be charged for their activities.
thehumanlynx: tough. Thats the problem isn't it? They (Times, NYT etc. ) all want to protect themselves and place themselves above and in-front of the rest of America. They think they are the moral authority and can operate above the law in spite of us.
It's worse than that. The press HAS no moral authority. They are completely AMORAL.
That includes supressing facts that would've cleared Rove and Libby in the Plamegate witchhunt.
That includes supressing reports of torture, murder, and abuse under the Soviets and Saddam (CNN did this to maintain their Baghdad bureau but has shown NO such professional courtesy to the United States).
That includes supressing news of impending ambush of US troops (and by extension civilians for journalists in communication with Al Qaida) and just reporting the resulting carnage. See Mike Wallace chastise Peter Jennings for even considering "influencing" the outcome and declaring any ties to America:

And here is the inside skinny on the Australian from Time Magazine who is undercover with the "insurgents" and seems to be communicating with Al Qaeda:
"The Insurgency also includes compelling personal video from Australian journalist Michael Ware, Baghdad bureau chief for Time magazine and one of the reporters with the most in-depth access to insurgent leaders."

I have been to Al Qaeda camps, Al Qaeda communities; I've seen them training.I am now in possession of their training video, so eerily reminiscent of what we saw coming out of Afghanistan: foot soldiers going through obstacle courses, men in masks learning how to search houses, fire missiles, handle weapons, bombs, assassinations, drive-by shootings. We're now seeing that happening here in Iraq. That is only happening as a result of the U.S. invasion and ongoing prison [problems].
NO you treasonous bastard. That is a result of the media pimping for terrorists by blowing the Abu Ghraib scandal out of proportion in effort to turn the US public against the war and the Bush administration in 2004, an election year.
Saddam was lopping off hands at Abu Ghraib, raping and disembowling the wives of prisoners.
Al Qaeda isn't attacking the kufir simply because of Abu Ghraib. Then again traitors at the Boston Globe ran porn site photos of models posing as Iraq women being raped by actors posing as US military. And these photos DID run in Egyptian and other papers as evidence FROM Abu Ghraib. And with fat head fat ass murderers like Ted Kennedy saying that Abu Ghraib had simply re-opened under new management the jihadists were told by the Left in America to believe the worst of the reports.
