Lay a strong magnet on your hard drive to wipe it and reformat after deleting partitions with an XP or a 2000 Installation Windows disk.
You can also remove the hard drive and have those you give the gift to go to Frys and spend $20 for another hard drive on sale.

I like heat, and now days the platters are made of aluminum rather than glass. Aluminum melts at 1100, and becomes like plastic at 800 /aprox>

I have
PGP on my machine. The free version puts a cute shredder icon on the desktop, which invokes the wipe utility on any files dropped on it. The wipe function can be configured to make from one to 28 passes. One is good enough. 28 is for the truly paranoid.
The package also includes a free space wiping utility. It's best done while you sleep it takes hours on a big disk.

One of the joys of living in the country is burning brush every few months. Whenever I retire a PC, I pull the hard drive. Then, the next time I burn brush, I toss all my retired hard drives in (along with any paper files I want to dispose of).
I am absolutely confident that no one will ever retrieve data off of any of the small slags of melted aluminum I pull out of the ashes the next day.

I was saving old hard disks and planning on erasing them all at once with a low yield nuclear warhead. Unfortunately all of my searching for uranium to make the warhead got the government's attention. Why didn't I have Joe Wilson investigate me?
