Labor Day, a national legal holiday over 100 years old has Over the years evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival.
It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day.
The Socialist Party held a similar celebration of the working class on May 1. This date eventually became known as May Day, and was celebrated by Socialists and Communists in commemoration of the working man. In the U.S., the first Monday in September was selected to reject any identification with Communism. Then in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as an official national holiday.
It has come to be recognized in the U.S. not only as a celebration of the working class, but even more so as the unofficial end of the summer season. In the northern half of the U.S. at least, the summer vacation season begins with Memorial Day and ends with Labor Day. Many colleges and some secondary and elementary schools begin classes immediately after Labor Day.
State parks, swimming pools, and campgrounds are all quite busy on Labor Day, as vacationers take one last advantage of the waning hot season. September is the month that marks the beginning of autumn. And, because of that, the average daytime maximum temperatures take a plunge during the month in most of the U.S.

DollyCali shares her "past"
Well..maybe a LITTLE bit! I am currently working harder NOW than ever in my life. The pay monetarily is ZIP. but I know there are other rewards. I am care giving my invalid mom & living with her in HER home & taking care of her home, yards, pets as well as her.
My first jobs were in junior high school. I did modeling and taught dance lessons.. Continued this until I graduated from college & then began a teaching career(Biology & Physical Education) of about 10 years in many geographical areas at the junior high, high school and college level.
While I was teaching in NC, I began my real estate career that started at a large firm in residential sales & ended in my own commercial business that dealt with Development, rehabs, and 1031 Exchanging. A lot of money was there and a lot of ego strokes, but deep down something was missing.
Following grad school I began a career in Hospital chaplaincy working with Cancer/AIDS/Hospice patients. Essentially, ALL of my patients died & it was my job to get them and their families ready for that transition. But this was the most rewarding career I had and it has helped me help others even now as I am officially unemployed.
Now it is YOUR TURN
Please join me and the other Singles & their Friends and as you visit this thread over the next fourr days(yes, we will have a ping on Monday also for anyone who wants to visit) to chat, visit and see what is going on with your FRiends, do take a few minutes to share a little about yourself & your work over the years.

How many flashlights do you have? --- One. I got it when I subscribed to Sports Illustrated eons ago.
When was the last time you checked them for working batteries? --- When I first put them in a long time ago.
Do you have a battery-operated portable radio? --- Yes, but I keep it at work for Rush Limbaugh.
Do you have one of those crank-operated radios that you could use even if you were running low on batteries? --- What?
Do you have an extra box of trash bags? --- No, but that I could buy.
Do you have extra rolls of duct tape? --- Extra rolls as in plural rolls? I've got a part of a roll. About 15 years old and matted with fuzz. It is someplace with the flashlight.
Do you have extra containers that you could fill with drinking water? --- No but I've thought of saving some plastic pop bottles for this.
Do you have knives and scissors? --- Yesssss.
Do you have a first aid kit? --- I have BC Powders and a bottle of hydrogen peroxide.
How much of all of this do you have? --- Not much.

What's on the list tonight?
We're in the slow "uninteresting August/September" phase. I can't think of anything playing right now I'd like to see.

people should talk about their jobs as Dolly originally suggested. My job sucks. The end.

First, you are right about the picture being of Ester Lily.
Secondly, you are going to be shocked at how paranoid I am. Here are my answers to my own questions.
Flashlights - I have close to two dozen. Most of them have working batteries, and I tend to check them regularly. I have a couple of packages of batteries in the pantry so that I can change batteries whenever necessary. I believe that there is almost no place in my house where one isn't within ten feet of either a flashlight or a fire extinguisher. In most cases, it's a flashlight.
Radios - I have at least one battery-operated portable that I keep in the guest room. We aren't supposed to have personal radios at work, so keeping it work isn't an issue for me. I also have two hand-crank radios. I bought one for myself last year. That radio has a crank on the side, and I can turn it for about sixty or seventy cranks and get twenty to thirty minutes of play. The radio also has a little LED light and gets weather and TV band frequencies. Last week, the plant where I work gave all of us another one of these radios as a safety prize. This one also has a flashlight and cell phone charger. It doesn't have the weather radio frequencies.
Trash bags and duct tape - I always have a couple of extra boxes of trash bags. I also have a couple of extra rolls of duct tape. If necessary, I could tape trash bags over a window or in other places to stop a leak.
Water bottles - I tend to keep old soda bottles available in case I need them for water bottles. When the hurricanes blew in last year, I probably had ten or fifteen gallons of water stored at various places around the house. Of course, ten gallons of water would go pretty quickly, but I tend to keep water available.
Knives and scissors - I have a few good knives that I could use in an emergency. I also have two pair of kitchen scissors. I think I have some cuticle scissors somewhere for precise work.
First Aid Kits - I have a couple of those little first aid kits that are pretty junky. I don't see them as being that valuable. I also try to keep a box of big gauze bandages available. I have both rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. I also have chlorohexidine which is a good antiseptic used in the animal industry. I have a couple of those insect bite/sting relief capsules. I've never tried one, but they are supposed to give quick relief from an insect bite or sting and supposed to neutralize any mild venom that is injected.
Yes, I am a little kooky for this stuff.

My job sucks. The end. Have you had previous jobs that didn't suck? What do you hope to do next? How do you plan to get to that next job that doesn't suck?

Have you had previous jobs that didn't suck?Working retail at the record stores 15 years ago. That was fun.
What do you hope to do next?
I hope to never have to work. I am not career oriented at all.
How do you plan to get to that next job that doesn't suck?
Quit.

Wow. This thread is DEAD!
To: Maximus_Ridiculousness
Yep, I'm trying to breath some life into it, but asking an eningeer to breath life into anything social is like asking a liberal to be consistently patriotic.

I'm guessing people don't want to talk about work at the end of a work week - OR - it's a holiday weekend and everyone's left town.
Personally, I need to get away from any thoughts of my job. Currently I am overworked and frustrated and I just started a new job this month. I do executive admin work and I have learned to HATE it more and more and more. It is one of the least rewarding lines of work out there. I do it cause it pays well and we gots bills to pay.
Anywhoo. I am now officially closing my mind off to all thoughts of work for the next three days....
See any good movies lately?

coolish but fun night at the HS football team.. both bands were outstanding & our team won..
nice Italian dinner/drinks afterward & the prospects tomorrow of breakfast with R gov candidate Ken Blackwell (a future POTUS I Hope), beach time with doggies at Lake Erie & then the air show in Cleveland w/blue angels..
and in evening, out of town guests who are returning to home in Chicago after month at their summer home in Maine (near 41).
and Sun/Mon even busier, if that is possible.
Thanks for sharing your pix Bill. Your "kids" are beautiful & have bonded with you. What more can you ask for in pets?

See any good movies lately? LOL I haven't been to a theater since 1997. I've rented a couple of more modern films once or twice, but it's been a while. I occasionally see things when they get to TV. What have you seen that you've liked?

Our night is a little cool, but I'm really not in a good position to take advantage of it. Your weekend sounds great. I'm afraid that mine won't be nearly so exciting. A friend wants to take me somewhere for my birthday, but I'm just not feeling very energetic. On the positive side, I did do my usual walk this afternoon and did the rowing machine this evening.

Ha.. bill, love your list..and you are an engineer..
for the rest of us it is
1) hope you have what you need
2) hope there will be adequate sunlight to illumine your home as you don't have a clue if your flashlight works(IF, you can find it)
3) cross your fingers, toes & eyes while praying hard!
(this is the right brained, non-engineering response to emergencies.)
sorry isn't it?
