Labor Day, a national legal holiday over 100 years old has Over the years evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival.

It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day.

The Socialist Party held a similar celebration of the working class on May 1. This date eventually became known as May Day, and was celebrated by Socialists and Communists in commemoration of the working man. In the U.S., the first Monday in September was selected to reject any identification with Communism. Then in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as an official national holiday.

It has come to be recognized in the U.S. not only as a celebration of the working class, but even more so as the unofficial end of the summer season. In the northern half of the U.S. at least, the summer vacation season begins with Memorial Day and ends with Labor Day. Many colleges and some secondary and elementary schools begin classes immediately after Labor Day.

State parks, swimming pools, and campgrounds are all quite busy on Labor Day, as vacationers take one last advantage of the waning hot season. September is the month that marks the beginning of autumn. And, because of that, the average daytime maximum temperatures take a plunge during the month in most of the U.S.

DollyCali shares her "past"

Well..maybe a LITTLE bit! I am currently working harder NOW than ever in my life. The pay monetarily is ZIP. but I know there are other rewards. I am care giving my invalid mom & living with her in HER home & taking care of her home, yards, pets as well as her.

My first “jobs” were in junior high school. I did modeling and taught dance lessons.. Continued this until I graduated from college & then began a teaching career(Biology & Physical Education) of about 10 years in many geographical areas at the junior high, high school and college level.

While I was teaching in NC, I began my real estate career that started at a large firm in residential sales & ended in my own commercial business that dealt with Development, rehabs, and 1031 Exchanging. A lot of money was there and a lot of ego strokes, but deep down something was missing.

Following grad school I began a career in Hospital chaplaincy working with Cancer/AIDS/Hospice patients. Essentially, ALL of my patients died & it was my job to get them and their families ready for that transition. But this was the most rewarding career I had and it has helped me help others – even now – as I am officially “unemployed”.

Hi all.. just got back to computerland..Interesing stories Bill & Barb on the cuts wow..Blood stains do come out, actually pretty easily if you use the right "formula".. and HOT waster is NOT part of that formula. Hot seems to set the stain.

cold water, vinegar/ammonia seem to do a good job, if you are vigilant.

Tracy, goodluck on the test! more money is good, lots of needs for most of us.

Nowhere.. been thinking about you & Pansy this week. Even with others around, you miss those. My Cali is my old gal. She arrived at my home 1988. I had not heard about your mayor dying.. was this sudden? when did it happen?

I haven't been up on all the news for quite a few weeks.

I remember being absolutely TERRIFIED of the Easter Bunny when I was a kid. I could not sleep on Easter eve. I was so scared that I wouldn't even leave the bedroom to go to the bathroom if I needed to. All night I would think that I was hearing footsteps coming. I was so afraid that a large man-size bunny would come into my bedroom, I’d hide under my covers all night. By morning, I wouldn't come downstairs until I knew the whole family had been down there to see if it was safe.

I know what you mean about getting laid off and the time that is wasted, you might fall behind some of your peers. I know I should be further along in life and career than I am, but at least I'm working and although I'm a very long term temp right now, I do bit on jobs that come open where I work at. At least I have a constant work history again, if you off work for a while, many employers would quetion that although if need be, I'd just tell the truth. I was talking to a co-worker and we were saying that it is a "good idea to keep working after getting laid off, even if it in't wat we want." Sure being on unemployment for the first week or two seems like a vacation but as time goes on, it drives one crazy." We went on, "you know when you're up at 3 AM watching movies in your underwear, something is wrong." Well, OK, perhaps once in a while on weekends but at least during the week, I have a job. B-) I worked at photo developing in a drugstore for a while, wasn't the greatest, but at least it provided income, although I needed more, plus I felt useful.

I am licensed to "Produce" insurance policies. Same thing as independent agents do. In State Farm...I work under an agent. Our agent is rarely in the office, so his wife, my co-worker and myself write the policies for our clients.

If I were in the hospital battling an infected wound, I'm not sure that I'd want to watch a History Channel show about the War Between the States. The medical care in those days wasn't very good, and much of the damage that soldiers sustained was not from initial wounds but from later infection.

Again, my condolences for Miss Pansy. I'm glad that you're getting a chance to chill out this evening.

I feel pretty worn out.

Right now we are getting a nice amount of rain and the kids are just relaxing with us.

I didn't try any hot water. I mostly tried this stuff called "Zout" which is a Dial product for removing stains from fabrics. I just happened to have this stuff sitting around because they gave it to us at work. We make detergent molecules for the companies that make the soap products, and the companies sometimes arrange free samples for us for special events. I don't know whether the stuff in "Zout" actually comes from our plant. It was reasonably successful with many of the stains, but there were some that were just too much for it. Maybe I'll give it another try with ammonia or vinegar.

Thanks. I know when I lost Greystone, it left a huge void. Even though he slept with my, I till have three out of four that still do, G.W., his brother (5), Boo (16), and Corky (17, now my oldest). Still hard to move on the bed. B-) Mom's bed is vacant since Pansy pased on, but there are times Pixie (13 or 14) sleeps with her but not recently. I'm bummed that Pansy is gone, she was doing well until she hit that brick wall. B-(

As to the mayor, in July, he had been diagnoed with lymphoma, a rare form of it where he had tumors on the brain. Usually treatment is very promising but in his case, he fdeveloped fluid on the brain so the had to install a shunt to drian the fluid, the chemo wasn;t working so they tried radiation. The shunt got infected and he went downhill from there.

In case of the mayor's death, the President of the City Council becomes mayor, his name is Luke Ravenstahl, he graduated high school in 1998, college in 2002/03 and is only 26 years old. He is the youngest "big city" mayor. He bacame Council President as a compromise since thre were two forces that wanted their own guy in but things would hae ended up in a loggerhead otherwise.
