Patiotic Funeral Music
me | 9-1-06 | IL Republican

My wife's Grandfather passed away this past Wednesday. He was a veteran of WWII fighting primarily in Italy.

Due to my Patriotic nature, the family asked me to assemble some background music for the visitation.

I'm struggling to come up with good somber patriotic music. Most of what I have is geared towards pumping a person up.

Any suggestions on what I can download and play at the visitation?

I am not afraid to spend money, and I have I-Tunes, so if you can think of it, I can probably download it.

Thanks in advance.

Mansions of the Lord They played it at President Reagan's funeral and it's the best song from "We Were Soldiers." Also, Eternal Father Strong to Save is good.

At my grandfather's funeral we played "onward Christian soldiers" and "Mansions of the Lord". They aren't strictly patriotic songs but I believe that my grandfather and many others from his generation saw them as patriotic.

Thank you,

Oddly enough, "We Were Soldiers" is only a partial album on I-tunes, and "Mansion's of the Lord" isn't available.

I own the DVD. Any easy way to extract the audio from it?

Other than putting it on an MP3 player or laptop, I don't know. I do know you can get it in sheet music...

There are recordings of the Battle Hymn Of The Republic at a suitably somber pace.

The same exist for Garry Owen.

Garry Owen.

Garry Owen was a bawdy Celtic drinking ballad. For a funeral?

I have heard military bands play Amazing Grace during retirements and funerals, and it comes across as somber and patriotic as well.

The Star-Spangled Banner started life as a bawdy drinking song as well.

Garry Owen is the official song of the US 7th Cavalry and is played at funerals of 7th soldiers regularly.

When my father,a Marine Corp Veteran of WWII died, we picked out several of his favorite old hymns to be sung by the congregation and men's chorus during his funeral. He was very proud of being a Christan and never wanted to talk about his years in the islands.
