Hmmm, can't find anything on Ohmeed Aziz Popal, but there is a reference to a Ahmed Aziz Popal...arrested in Canada back in 1998 for smuggling an Afghan woman into Canada. Probably not the same guy, but you never know. Maybe he changed his first name to slip into the USA without an arrest history.

SMUGGLER JAILED A man who attempted to smuggle a pregnant Afghanistan woman and her 18-month-old daughter into Canada has been sentenced to 60 days in jail. Ahmed Aziz Popal, 39, pleaded guilty to two counts of aiding and abetting the smuggling of the woman and child in Richmond provincial court on Wednesday. Popal, who lives in Toronto, Ontario, arrived with the woman and child at Vancouver International Airport on a flight from Kuala Lumpur on Jan. 16. Popal used a fraudulent Afghanistan passport and a genuine Canadian record of landing document to smuggle the pair.

The first reports I read identified him as Omeed A. Popal.

The driver's name was not immediately released, but state motor vehicle records show the license plate on the SUV registered to Omeed A. Popal of Fremont.

And of course, nobody had a clue why he did this.

"These are the things, these are so senseless," Mayor Gavin Newsom said after meeting with victims and their families. "They're utterly inexplicable. They're impossible to rationalize."

Okay, so his cousin, Zargona Ramish had a clue.

"He thought the devil was coming to him," said Zargona Ramish, who went to the family's home Tuesday afternoon while Popal's relatives were speaking with police. "He is a very good person. He is not like that. What's wrong with him?"
