HELP! Just found a parakeet (Vanity)

HELP! I went into work for a short while this afternoon. When I came out of the office there was a parakeet hanging around the door. I caught it and got a cage and food on the way home. He dove into the food like a starving tiger and ate for 10 minutes before I got concerned that he would explode and get feathers all over the house so I took the food away from him.
The band on the leg may help find the owner but until then I can use all the help I can get.
Will these things eat themselves to death?
Yes I am logged in but I haven't had my shower yet.

Well I'm just going to guess and say that it should require much less oven time that a turkey.

no. birds are self-regulators. He will eat until he's full, then stop. How much can a little parakeet hold, anyway? Make sure he has plenty of clean water to drink, and he'll be happy.

Hey, I don't think the bird will gorge himself - he also might need a little sand or grit to help him digest his food. Offer him water and maybe a little lettuce -- they like greens as well.
Tomorrow, you might check him for mites.

I had a parakeet in college that was free fed... I never had him over-eat, but he was never starved either.
I'm pinging the dog and horse lists because we don't have a bird list... Certainly some of them know something of birds :~)

i had a friend in newport news virginia have 2 parakeets and a cockateel land on him. (at seperate times). he kept them all in cages and the cockateel never stoped making racket. one day a plumber came to the house and he said, "you know, i used to have a bird just like that, he never shut up. so, i threw him out the window."
he would not take the bird back.

You can probably use the same sauce recipe, though.

Poor thing was just very hungry. We kept food and water in the cage all the time for ours, they are easy to care for.
I had one that talked.

They won't eat themselves to death. And they always seem to eat like that. They throw husks all over.
The band is on every parakeet. I don't think it will help you find the owner.
Take this as a lucky break because they are great pets.

- Never go into the office on your day off:)
-I've had several birds- they're great fun and surprisingly companionable. They won't gorge themselves to death- apparently he was really hungry! Fresh water every day- grit to help digestion. My birds loved to eat lettuce- carrots, spinach etc.
-Have you named the bird yet?

The bird won't eat itself to death, at least none of mine did.
Fresh Water is really important for a bird.
You may also want to learn how to or find someone who knows how to clip wings unless you want him to be able to fly...
As for finding the owner, unless you hear someone talking about it, it's about like finding a needle in a haystack....
