I envy those who have FiOS too! The local phone company here has been test driving wireless internet. According to their maps, the antenna they're using doesn't cover this area. Hopefully in the future they'll branch out and install a couple more antennas. So for me, the only broadband option still remains satellite internet. I've been thinking of going with WildBlue. Their technology is much newer than the others that are out there, since they were a start up a couple years ago.

Their technology is newer than Hughes. DirecTV, Dish Network and AT&T are all switching their alliances to StarBand.

My understanding is, Dish and DirecTV were going to become essentially WildBlue resellers. I believe they were going to bundle satellite TV (their brand) with internet (WildBlue). The internet side would essentially not be competitive, just the television side, for obvious reasons. LOL

Having had both DSL and cable in the past, I can tell you that satellite is not nearly as good, but it's far better than dial up.

Yep. They pretty much state up front if you intend on playing first-person shooter games or live multiplayer games like racing or aviation sims, satellite is not for you. There is a 1 second latency between their uplink, the satellite and your location.

Everything else like downloading files, e-mail, surfing the web, streaming audio, etc., will work fine, you'll be set to go.

I'm on dialup, and I went ahead and used the CD-ROM route to get SP2. Costs nothing but a very small S/H fee.

I had Direct computer uplink, and it was expensive (About 50 a month, and then installation which I paid for) but worked fine...VERY fast. When it rained, however, it "blacked out"...so if you don't live in a dry area, (I lived in rural Oklahoma) you should invest in a cover....

You need to have a view of the southern sky...we had to put it high on our roof.

I have a Verizon wireless card and as mentioned about the Sprint card, it too is portable and you can use it anywhere there is a Verizon signal. It is 67.95 a month for unlimited usage. Yes, a little high, but I've even used it driving down the road in mountainous areas ~ well, someone else was driving! Good luck.

It has been a life-long goal of mine :)

BTW do you live near Fremont? I have an aunt who lives there.
