Yes FReepers and FReeperettes, its time once again for another season of Survivor.
This time they are in the Cook Islands, in the middle of the South Pacific.
I was going to start off this thread by informing you all about how Mark Burnetts Production Company has decided to split the tribe along ethnic backgrounds. But that subject has been pretty much beaten to death on at least three different threads. So. . . .
I would like to point out that for all their talk about minorities not applying to the show as much as whites and about how they had to send their casting producers out to round up minorities, they apparently didnt have to look too far.
Of the 20 contestants recruited for this season, no less than 13 are from California!
And of those 13, NINE are from the greater Los Angeles area!
So much for diversity!
Thanks for the ping cuz.
Bump to read again later.
GM Withdraws CBS' 'Survivor' Sponsorship
By TOM KRISHER, Associated Press Writer
DETROIT - General Motors Corp. has decided to end its sponsorship of CBS' hit series "Survivor," but the world's largest automaker said Wednesday that the decision had nothing to do with the reality show's controversial decision to divide its contestants in the upcoming season by race and ethnicity.
GM spokeswoman Ryndee S. Carney said the company made the decision in the normal course of making its media buys months ago, before the show made its recent announcement.
"I think it's just a coincidence. I know it's not cause and effect," Carney said.
A group of New York City officials have criticized the new format, saying it promotes divisiveness. They have asked CBS to reconsider its plans.
"How could anybody be so desperate for ratings?" City Councilman John Liu asked last week.
Show creator Mark Burnett said Tuesday that many of those criticizing the new approach haven't ever seen the show and don't understand how it works.
"By putting people in tribes, they clearly have to get rid of people of their own ethnicity," he told The Associated Press during a conference call. "So it's not racial at all."
For the first portion of the 13th edition of "Survivor," which premieres Sept. 14, the contestants competing for the $1 million prize while stranded on the Cook Islands in the South Pacific will be divided into four teams - blacks, Asians, Hispanics and whites.
GM, which has sponsored "Survivor" since it premiered in May 2000 and was the show's exclusive automotive sponsor, is shifting some of its media dollars from prime-time television to more live sports, awards shows and other big events, Carney said.
The Detroit-based company also decided that its media strategy should feature cars and trucks integrated into shows, which was difficult on "Survivor," she said. Although one episode did feature a Pontiac Aztek, the opportunities for cars and trucks on the show were few, Carney said.
"There's a limited number of possibilities as to how you can integrate a car or truck in a show that people spend their whole time on an island," she said.
CBS spokesman Chris Ender said GM notified the network of its decision long before the new "Survivor" format was announced. He said the company had no knowledge of the competition by race.
"They informed us several months ago that they wouldn't be part of the upcoming season. It's unrelated to the controversy surrounding the upcoming edition," Ender said.
CBS Entertainment, which is part of New York-based CBS Corp., will stick with the format despite the criticism, he said.
Ender would not say if any other sponsors had left the show or if CBS had a replacement for GM.
CBS Entertainment, which is part of New York-based CBS Corp., has defended the ethnic twist, saying it follows the show's tradition of introducing new creative elements and casting structures that reflect cultural and social issues.
Like GM, other advertisers will move more toward integrating their products into shows as more viewers use technology such as digital video recorders to avoid watching commercials, said Robert Thompson, professor of television and popular culture at Syracuse University.
"Advertising is going to have to go back to the early days of television when you had products integrated into the shows themselves," he said.
While he doesn't expect it to happen within five years, the single-spot commercial might eventually disappear, Thompson added.
Take care,
Have a great Labor Day weekend,
FReepmail me if you want added to or removed from the Survivor Ping List.
Again, I say that none of the race pimps can say anything about Survivor unless they take on BET, Miss Black American, etc., etc., at the same time.
I agree.
People are blowing this WAY out of proportion.
After last season I was going to take a season off. But with this new setup I'll be tuning in to give it a shot just to spite the race pimps.
So Burnett won back at least 5 viewers with this.
The contestants aren't forced to play Survivor and I haven't heard about any of them quitting because they objected to the different tribe race division. The media and other yackers need to move on from the race card stuff and get a life.
Survivor is anything but desperate for ratings.
He does! lol I do prefer this look to the one Lukas sports.
No argument here! I never have liked the "goth" look. I watched some spots on the TV Guide review about Survivor. It looks like it's going to be a great season.
Dosen't she look like Laura Ingram?
I don't know. I'm having a difficult time finding any close up pictures of Laura Ingram to compare with.
The Raratonga Tribe - (Blue Buffs): Adam, Jessica, Parvati, Candice, Jonathan
The Aitutaki Tribe (Red Buffs): Cecilia, Ozzy, Cristina, J.P., Billy
The Puka Puka Tribe (Green Buffs): Brad, Becky, Cao Boi, Jenny, Yul
The Manihiki Tribe - (Yellow Buffs): Rebecca, Nathan, Sundra, Sekou, Stephannie
Well folks, Survivor: Cook Islands starts in one week. And I will have to admit, that the spoiler sites are unusually quiet with it being only one week away.
The general theme of this season is loosely based on the Mutiny on the Bounty story, and Tribal Council is supposed to occur in a mock-up of a shipwreck, as we see in the picture below.
Well, thats all I have for now, (I told you the spoiler sites are quiet!) so
Take care,
Freepmail me if you want to be added to or removed from the Survivor Ping List.
Thank you Cuz - looking forward to another season with you at the recap helm.
CBS owes you a cut of the revenue. If it weren't for your threads, I would've quit watching five seasons back.

Well ladies and gentlemen, its been a long summer but the new season of Survivor is finally here! And Jeff Probst claims that this is going to be one of the best seasons ever!
No offense Jeff but you have been promising that for the past 6 seasons so . . .
WE will be the judges of that!
So what is going to happen? How will the show open? What will the challenges be? Who will get exiled? Who will get the boot? Read on dear friends, read on.
The title of the opening episode is: "I Can Forgive Her But I Don't Have to Because She Screwed With My Chickens!"
Keep reading dear readers, I promise it gets better.
The vidcaps shown above complements of TrueDorkTimes.com.
The vidcaps from the previews indicate that the show will open with all 20 contestants onboard a sailing vessel. Jeff informs them that they have so many seconds to gather up what they can before they will be thrown overboard. A mad scramble ensues and everyone gets wet. (Even a couple of chickens!) The players then paddle to shore on their makeshift rafts and the game is on!
The first challenge will probably be a combination reward and immunity challenge. It appears to be an obstacle course type challenge including assembling a boat, rowing out to collect the all important fire, rowing back, disassembling the boat, constructing a ladder to a raised platform, having all members of the tribe climb the ladder to light their tribal torch. The first three tribes to complete this challenge will receive a flint to make fire and be immune from the first tribal council. The last tribe will have to boot one member at tribal council.
Now for the twist. We know that the producers are going to continue the exile island theme this season. They will probably also include a hidden immunity idol somewhere on this island. Since the tribe that looses the first reward/immunity challenge cannot sit someone out at the first tribal council, this tribe will select someone from one of the other tribes to be the first person sent to exile island. (Probably from the tribe that comes in third.)
By examining the vidcaps in minute detail we can see that the Manihiki Tribe is the only tribe that does not have fire. Therefore they loose the reward/immunity challenge and are the first to go to tribal council. We also know that the three other tribes have fire at their camps, and everyone is seen at camp in these vidcaps except one person. Through the simple process of elimination, we can safely say that Jonathan (from the Raratonga Tribe) is the first person sent to exile island.
Now the question is. . . Which member of the Manihiki tribe is our first boot? Rebecca, Nathan, Sundra, Sekou, or Stephannie? Even though the women outnumber the men 3 to 2, I dont think they have been together as a tribe long enough for the women to form an alliance. And I sincerely doubt that the tribe will boot one of their two men this early in the game. (Why get rid of your strength right away?)
Therefore logic indicates that one of the three women will be our first boot. But which one? I must consult my magic crystal coffee mug for the answer.
Rebecca, Sundra or Stephannie?
Well definitely not Sundra,
and I dont think that its Stephannies time to go,
therefore Rebecca is our first boot.
Well, there you have it:
Reward Challenge Winner: Aitutaki, Puka Puka & Raratonga tribes
Sent to Exile Island : Jonathan
Immunity Challenge Winner: Aitutaki, Puka Puka & Raratonga tribes
Tribal Council Bootee: Rebecca
Ill be back Monday morning with my somewhat witty (and often rather caustic) recap so for now,
Take care,
Freepmail me if you want to be added to or removed from the Survivor Ping List.
thanks Cuz, looking forward to another season of Survivor...
