Utter Vanity Request - Help Me Name My New Puppy

Vanity of vanities . . .

I put a deposit down today on a female Black Labrador Retriever, born 8/16. She'll be ready to come home in October. So now I've got to figure out a name for this little bundle of joy.

She's coming from Wisconsin, from Candlewood Kennels which is arguably the best field trial kennel in the country. She's not a typical field trial dog, she has some "dual purpose" (i.e. show and hunt test) on her mom's side. Her mom is a fully trained hunting dog who has produced good field dogs.

The tradition is to somehow combine the names of the father and mother. Of course her prefix has to be Candlewood. The sire is FC/AFC The Man In Black ("Cash"), who is by 2xNAFC/2xCNAFC Ebonstar Lean Mac (a top producing sire - 117 field champions) out of Gator Point's Sweet Potato Pie, a CFTC/CAFTC Pachanga Magnum Force daughter out of a HRCH. The dam is Kerrybrook Candlewood Connor, who is by Ch. Franklin's Champagne out of Kerrybrook's March to the Sea JH. That side has notable FC/AFC Webshire's Honest Abe, another very good field trial sire, and Abercrombie & Fitch MH, who is a sire not only of field dogs but also numerous seeing eye dogs and search and rescue dogs. Two of his get were S&R dogs at the Twin Towers. So she should have plenty of brains, and plenty of "go". Because of the show background she should be a pretty girl as well.

The obvious way to go is a Johnny Cash song . . . friend of mine suggested "A Dog Named Sue" . . . we could easily tie in her mom's name with an "O'Connor" . . . but I'm kind of looking for something cute and a little unusual.

I figured I could get both out of the dog fanciers at FR . . . the floor is open for nominations.

If I give her a Gaelic name, it will be the traditional "Dileas" - pronounced JEEL-as, meaning "Fido" or "faithful". Maybe "Dileas Dubh" - Black Fido.

I didn't know Ciara meant "black" - I'm pretty sure "dubh" is black and "donn" is brown, even in Irish.

How about India Conchobhar?? Or Deidre Conchobhar?

From the Gaelic name Conchobhar which means "dog lover" or "wolf lover". This was the name of an early king of Ulster. Irish legends tell of his tragic desire for Deirdre.\\http://www.behindthename.com/php/search.php?terms=connor&type=n&operator=or

My chocolate labs' sire was Frabraken Comedy Star so the whole litter was named after comedians....mine was Cosby...giggle...my yellow is named Icon

May I suggest you buy some cheap disposable diapers for those accidents? If the pup winky tinks on carpet put the diaper on the spot and stand on it and it soaks a lot of the wet and it is almost a dry carpet.

As for a names....June, Regan, Lizzy, Suzy

Good luck and I want to see pictures

Name it Dog. I named our cat Cat. Works for me, but I suck with names. My wife sucks with names too. We had three kids who didn't have names until the day we left the hospital, and that's because we were forced to do it before we could leave.....

Because of your screen name I'm going to take a wild guess and suggest you let the "kids" choose the pup's name.

A little over twelve years ago my kids picked a chocolate lab pup from a litter. They chose the smallest pup in the bunch and she turned out to be the best dog I've ever known. She's still with us but in the last few months her back legs are really troubling her and she can no longer eat a hard dog biscuit which she really did enjoy.

Best of luck with her and I hope you get and give as much love as we've had with our Brook.

Maybe a better translation is dark one.

"In the Gaelic language, "Ciara" (pronounced KEER-a) means "the dark one."

"Ciara Leila Cleopatra Jones" sounds good to me. :)

A cool thing about A Dog Named Sue is that one of the late, great dogs in our hunting club was named Super Sue. And her owner was the one who advised me on choosing a pedigree (he bred Super Sue to Lean Mac and got Nike, who won the Super Retriever Series before her untimely death).

I thought about Katy Too also - or Rose O'Connor (as in "Give My Love to Rose")

As for Her Royal Highness Shelley the Queen of the House, we think she is going to be o.k. with it, she loves puppies.

She may NOT take too kindly to having one in Her House, though. Although my vet says usually the only time you have real problems is with two boys feeling their oats.

Well, sleep on it and let me know. I'm counting on you!

Are you at all familiar with the Franklin or Kerrybrook lines? They're apparently fairly well known in the conformation world . . . not that I would know anything about that . . . < ducking >
