Redwood Forest, Crescent City, Cal...go to the Stout Grove...unpaved road but FABULOUS National Park Scenery!! Cannon Beach, Oregon to see Haystack rock...hopefully at low tide when you can walk up to the 3rd largest monolith in the world and see all the sea stars and other fish life clinging til the tide comes in again!! Seaside, Oregon..end of Lewis and Clark trail.
In Seattle take a ferry ride to Bainbridge and back....take a ride on the Ducks...go up to Kerry Park to the most fabulous view of Seattle!! Too bad you only have a week!!

I might add to the recommended Oregon Stops:
Bandon for the beach rocks.
Gold Beach for the Wild Rogue River (a river jet boat ride is worth your half or full day)
There a lot of very good seafood places but "The Sea Hag" at Depoe Bay is a dandy lunch stop right in the middle of some of the most scenic coastline.

Get off the road in Humboldt County and hike into the marijuana forest. It's second only to the Redwood Forest.
There's a cool aquarium in Eureka, and an awesome graveyard in Arcata. 10 minute stop there, but a Kodak Moment looking out over the coastline.

1. Don't sleep out on the beaches. IIRC, there's still an unsolved murder
of a young couple murdered a beach in Northern Califonia, as seen on
"America's Most Wanted".
2. Just cruise past Seattle and go to Vancouver. Just hit Seattle on the way back.
It was a real screw-up that we didn't sign a treaty with the British until
we got that spot of earth.
OK, maybe I was over the top. But I just like Vancouver better as the
scenery is a bit more breathtaking and maybe the town is a little cleaner.
Well, except for the marijuana district know as "Gas Town" (or something
like that).

When you get to Florence, OR (on the OR coast 60 miles west of Eugene) have lunch or dinner at the Bridgewater Restaurant (old part of town). Had lunch there last week ... excellent.

Stop by Longview and see the statue of the Squirrel, and the Nutty Narrows Bridge. It is a bridge built across a road for the squirrels, so they don't get squished.
Mt St. Helens on a clear day (Ya better hurry, cloudy season starts soon)
Mt Rainier
Dinner at Ivar's on the waterfront. Or better yet, Salty's on Alki. The best view of the city anywhere.

Drove the Coast highway from San Diego to Seattle 2-3 times in a Datsun 260Z. Great drive.
ONE WARNING--GET RESERVATIONS AHEAD OF TIME! Lodging tends to be booked up for 100's of miles.
Hearst Castle is a must see. Big Sur, of course. A number of the beach communities are beautiful etc. but many not all that greatly different from one another. Great vistas and picture post card scenes. If you have a film or high resolution digital--plan to take time to stop and use them.
I think Solvang is on that route though south of San Fran.
Monteray and the Acquarium is probably south of San Fran, as I recall--but might be worth the relatively short trip down to see it from San Fran.
Certainly the redwoods are wonderful and would probably be worth a night amidst them, if possible.
Of course, a great quake and tsunami could mess up all such plans so we'll pray any such would occur well after your trip, if at all! LOL.
God's best and safe traveling to you.
Please post pics and travelogue if you are able! And ping me to it. Was a favorite trip of mine.

There are a few nice spots to see here in Marin County. Obviously the view of the Golden Gate Bridge from the Marin Headlands-.jpg)
Just get a good map and get yourself to Muir Woods- very cool Giant Redwoods-
The ride out HiWay 1 is beautiful! Stop at Muir Beach-
Stinson Beach is right on HiWay 1 also..
On your way up the coast make sure to stop at Point Reyes, very nice....
The Golden Gate and Point Reyes National Parks are awesome...spend your first day sightseeing here! There is a lot to see driving up Hiway 1 ...its fantastic. The Northern California and Oregon Coast are really beautiful, I wish I was going on this trip. You will have a great time and the weather is perfect right now, 75 degrees and "golden".

The Denby stoneware pottery studio I think is still just north of the Golden Gate bridge. It's on the right side of the highway and was within 2-5 right turns north of the bridge--back in 1978-ish. Probably still is. Well worth seeing and their seconds are quite reasonable.

You won't have any trouble finding great scenery on that drive, if that's a goal. I've made it several times and will impart to you something I wish someone had done for me. Avoid late night/very early morning driving through the mountains because the fog can get heavy, reducing your visibility considerably. This alone, would normally be bad enough, but there exists the problem of falling rocks from the cliffs (I'm talking quite substantial here) that have a nasty habit of landing on the Hwy. You'll want to see those babies coming.
Seattle is a world class city, aesthetically speaking, and you'll want to see the Sound, the market area, and maybe take the underground tour. Now, the natives make look at you oddly if you smile at them or say "hello". They just aren't into that sort of thing. Refrain from this behavior.
Sounds like you won't venture this far to the east, but sometime do make a point of seeing Klamath Falls, Or.
Enjoy your trip.

University of Oregon Ducks. If you stop by just before a football game you can see thousands of sitting ducks.
Capitalizing on his friendship with a Disney cartoonist, UO Athletic Director Leo Harris met Disney in Los Angeles. The two men reached an informal agreement granting the University of Oregon permission to use the Donald-like Duck as its sports mascot.
This makes a good stop on the way back to the coast from Crater Lake.
