LOWELL, Mass. A trailer carrying dozens of puppies to Northeast pet stores caught fire just off an interstate, killing all of the estimated 60 dogs inside, authorities said. The driver first noticed smoke coming from his trailer just before 5 p.m. Monday, state police said. He pulled over, and the Lowell Fire Department put out the flames that engulfed the trailer, but they couldn't save the puppies. The puppies were a variety of breeds between the ages of 8 and 12 weeks, according to a state police news release. Neither the driver, identified as Joseph Price, 40, of Joplin, Mo., nor his passenger, William Iriarte, 50, of Nesho, Mo., was injured. A preliminary investigation indicated that a malfunctioning fan in the rear of the trailer may have started the fire, police said. No charges have been filed. The truck was owned by the Hunte Corp. of Goodman, Mo., a major puppy supplier for pet stores. "The puppies were all beautiful, healthy purebreds that were on their way to quality retailers in the northeast and eventually to loving New England families," the company said in a statement. The company said it has a near-perfect safety record.

Sad ping.
That is very sad!!
Poor things.
A terrible end to a bunch of puppy-mill puppies. Poor babies...
Please folks - if you going to buy a dog find a reputable breeder or go to the pound. Pet stores should not sell puppies and if they stopped, puppy millers wouldn't have a buyer.
Save a life, adopt a rescue.
Exactly.
Very sad story.

I second that. Rescue groups don't get the press that shelters do, most of the dogs are cared for in foster homes if possible, and they are evaluated by people who are very familiar with the breed (whatever breed the rescue is for). And I have seen some of the neatest dogs come from rescue.

Horrendous!
That does sound like a puppy mill dealer. I'm surprised the truck driver and/or his company admitted it and did not just say it was loaded with pet store inventory. This story is sad for the puppies but horrible in the big picture.
YOU HAVE TO READ THIS!!!

Did you buy a sick pet store puppy? Are the words "Hunte Corp." on your puppy's papers? If so, you may want to join a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT against Hunte Corp
Above: These photos of the Hunte truck were taken on Pickett Road in Fairfax City, Virginia, just after the truck delivered approximately 45 puppies to the Fairfax City Petland. The part that contains the puppies has no windows. The truck has Missouri license plates and delivers puppies weekly.
The Hunte Corporation is currently the largest puppy broker in the U.S. It is based in Goodman, Missouri. It buys puppies from puppy mills in several Midwestern states and then sells them to pet stores all over the country, including many Petlands. Breeders either drop the puppies off at the Hunte building or a Hunte truck goes out to pick them up. The puppies are checked over by Hunte employees. The breeders expect to receive a certain price from Hunte depending on the breed of dog, but if Hunte decides the puppies are not very healthy, they may offer the breeder less money. The breeders usually accept the lower price, as they have no use for the puppies.

Not their first time in the news, I see.
My heart breaks for the pups.
So they are claiming Hunte isn't a truck line that's hired like any other shipper, it's business is just dogs?

Notice there isn't a SHRED of corporate grief over the death of living creatures. Instead, Hunte jumps at the chance for a little free public relations for their "quality retailers" (spit).
Note that Hunte is not to be confused with the legit truck line "J. B. Hunt."
I saw this story on the news in St. Louis (nothing about it being a Puppymill type operation on the news), then I saw this FR post about it and I decided to google the company name and that is what popped up. Southern Missouri loaded with puppymills. Goodman Mo is in the far southwestern corner of Missouri.
I'd say they own their own trucks and most likely all they haul in them is puppies and possibly other livestock.
here is the Hunte Corp website

Either buy from a reputable breeder (who belongs to a local breed organization and does something with the pups - shows or trials or hunt tests) or go to a well established Breed Rescue organization.
One of our new people at work fosters dogs for Golden Retriever Rescue here. Fascinating! They do spend a lot of time evaluating their rescues before they send them out, and they try to match the pups with the right homes.
Oooo, I don't like sad puppy stories.
