Preparations are well under way for the Valley's premier aviation event - the Edwards Air Force Base Open House and Air Show. The free two-day event is set for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 28 and 29, at the base that has been home to flight testing nearly every aircraft in the Air Force inventory - past, present and future. That heritage is reflected in the event's theme - "The Edwards' Edge: Making History, Reaching New Heights."

This year's festivities also will honor the 60th anniversary of the Air Force, one of the first official events to do so.

Headlining the air show is the Air Force Thunderbirds precision flying team, bringing their brand of heart-pounding aerial displays. Also scheduled to perform are the Army's Golden Knights parachute team and the Royal Dutch Air Force precision flight demonstration team.

Other aircraft scheduled to appear in flight are the F-22A Raptor, Predator unmanned aircraft, B-1 bomber, B-52, B-2 stealth bomber, F-18, NASA's high-altitude ER-2, C-17 Globemaster III, among others.

Additional performances by the Red Bull MiG 15 and aerobatic and wing-walking acts are also on the schedule.

The mile of static displays set up along the flightline will showcase military and civilian aircraft.

In addition to the aircraft, visitors will find food concessions, a special children's area, craft fair and displays from major defense contractors, law enforcement agencies and others.

Admission and parking for the event are free. Gates open at 7 a.m. and flying is expected to begin at 10 a.m. each day.

Details about the Open House and Air Show are available at www.edwards.af.mil or (661) 277-3510.
