Power Football Will Lead To Success (Coach Shell, Raiders PING List)

What a weekend. John Madden gets his long overdue induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Raiders get a win in the Sunday night Pre-season opener. But I cant for the life of me, figure out what all the crying about is from so many Raider fans. Did the team look good? Not really, but they showed flashes on defense and the defense is going to carry this team for the first eight games or so. I know the Eagles first teamers came out and moved the ball well in the opening drive, but they should have been able to do that. They are a better football team, right now. Look, this notion that the hiring of Art Shell is going to make this football team some kind of juggernaut in the NFL is stupid. This team needs to be recast out of the west coast offense which stresses finesse to the power back offense that Art and Tom Walsh want to run and this takes time. Something else it also takes is talent and the Raiders need more of that. Center Jake Grove didnt look good as the anchor of the offensive line and Robert Gallery looked slow at times also. But that was one game in a totally different scheme and with four of the five on the offensive line starters playing new positions.
--snip--
All of us think we know what the Raiders were in the 1970s and through most of the 80s but I wonder if any of us really know. We can all agree they were tough, rough and cheap shot guys at times. But they all were great football players who wanted to win more than anything and you dont grow those type of players on trees.

I'm out of town on a different comp, so I don't have access to the ping list.

I read the article over at CBS Sportsline today and that is crazy. Wonder who will replace him over at FOX?

I thought Art Shell did a good job when he first coached the Raiders, and I'm confident he will soon bring this team into contention.
I went to my first Raider game in Oakland in 1969, purchased Raider season tickets in 1970, and have been a fan ever since.

Lots of talk of Joe Buck taking over. I heard some radio guys mention that it's proposed that Buck somehow could continue in his other capacity as well. Not sure how this would work unless they did a roving studio each week. It's very difficult to imagine this scenario.

I did too, given a lot of the circumstances during his first tenure. Despite his shortcomings (his poor late game clock management, that we couldn't beat KC) his worst season--'92 I believe--we finished 7-9. Given the past 3 seasons, 7-9 doesn't look that bad.

If 7-9 was his worse, I'll go on record predicting this season will break that record.

It's very difficult to imagine this scenario. It could be, but from the way you wrote this, I sort of envisioned an NFL version of ESPN's "College Gameday", where the FOX crew would go on the road to whichever NFC city has the matchup they are covering. But maybe I'm taking a different view of this?
