Music beat on Rush's show?
EEE | 02 AUGUST 2006 | EEE

Right before the Rush show starts, there's this beat to a song that plays. The beat is very good. I can't remember the artist though. It's a female artist because I vaguely remember the song. But I can't think of the artist though!

The main theme? That's The Pretenders. "My City is gone" or something like that.

"My City was Gone". The Pretenders. She hates Rush and wants him to stop using her song...

Not true, she licensed the song to him three years ago.

The name of the song is actually "Back to Ohio", I think.

I heard a story that people at a Pretenders concert started shouting "Rush, Rush, Rush. . . " as they started playing the song. The Pretenders didn't have any idea what was going on.

It is "My city is gone:" Lyrics follow:

I WENT BACK TO OHIO
BUT MY CITY WAS GONE
THERE WAS NO TRAIN STATION
THERE WAS NO DOWNTOWN
SOUTH HOWARD HAD DISAPPEARED
ALL MY FAVORITE PLACES
MY CITY HAD BEEN PULLED DOWN
REDUCED TO PARKING SPACES
A, O, WAY TO GO OHIO

WELL I WENT BACK TO OHIO
BUT MY FAMILY WAS GONE
I STOOD ON THE BACK PORCH
THERE WAS NOBODY HOME
I WAS STUNNED AND AMAZED
MY CHILDHOOD MEMORIES
SLOWLY SWIRLED PAST
LIKE THE WIND THROUGH THE TREES
A, O, OH WAY TO GO OHIO

I WENT BACK TO OHIO
BUT MY PRETTY COUNTRYSIDE
HAD BEEN PAVED DOWN THE MIDDLE
BY A GOVERNMENT THAT HAD NO PRIDE
THE FARMS OF OHIO
HAD BEEN REPLACED BY SHOPPING MALLS
AND MUZAK FILLED THE AIR
FROM SENECA TO CUYAHOGA FALLS
SAID, A, O, OH WAY TO GO OHIO

And muzak filled the air
From Seneca to Cuyahoga falls
Said, A, O, oh way to go Ohio

Not true, she licensed the song to him three years ago.

Wasn't there a stipulation that the vocals be removed? Seems to me that originally he used it at times with the vocals.

The real trivia question is:

What year did Rush start using this song as his opening theme?

1988
1990
1992
1994
1996
1998
None of the above

"Seems to me that originally he used it at times with the vocals."

The afternoon following Election Day 2004 he played the whole song (with vocals). The song especially was fitting for Election Day 2004, due to the fact it's about Ohio, which was crucial for Bush.

It is the 7th song on the "Learning to crawl" album, and it is called, "My City was Gone".

Dont mess with a Pretenders fan.

1988, or whenever he was in Sacramento.

From Wikipedia (so I don't vouch for absolute truth):

"Briefly in 1999, Limbaugh was forced to suspend playing the song while negotiating with Hynde. Hynde eventually decided to allow Limbaugh to use it, with Limbaugh paying Hynde approximately $500,000/year which she donates to the animal rights organization PETA. Hynde explained that she doesn't agree with Limbaugh but her parents are big fans."

Yes, but I was thinking about farther back than that.

Yeah, he only can use the opening beat.
