I have this vague recall that a group of gay Republicans met to discuss their political concerns and decided to form a lobbying group, and that this first meeting was held in a cabin by a lake in Wisconsin...a log cabin. Somebody suggested they name their group for the place where they first met. If this is wrong I'm sure someone will correct it.

Have to give credit to my brother on this one. He said " why do gays want their entire identity defined by one act (sexual) to encompass their entire lives? ( Well I know it is actually for recruitment reasons). He went on to say, why not have minority groups based on other personal ( non public) acts such as " left handed butt wipers" or "nose pickers" and get federal identification for what should be a private act?

Like what they do in private should define a frame of what we should think about them when they are not engaged in that identifying act. We don't have people on this forum saying " as a nose picking American I feel Blah blah blah"

It is selfish, self focused, and arrogant....come to think of it, that does describe many in the gay community.

I gave it some thought and I am almost convinced that you are a troll. You register and instead of blending in with the crowd and participating in one of thousands of discussions, your FIRST comment is to identify yourself as part of a group, and then you ask if you can start a thread of interest specific to your group.

I can bet you are posting this thread on other liberal sites to show what a bunch of bigoted homophobes we are. Well we are not and we really don't care. But you, by your mere opening comment have proved you are not a conservative at all, and your "log-cabinness" has nothing to do with it.

Oh well, now I just read a post where it was stated that these gay Republicans believed Lincoln was gay and named themselves after him without using his name...using his association in history with a log cabin, thus calling themselves Log Cabin Republicans. Maybe that's it and I dreamed that it had to do with their meeting first in a log cabin. I'm really not sure, just thought I recalled something...

The name of the organization is a reference to the first Republican President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, who was born in a log cabin. The group initially proposed to name themselves Lincoln Club, but found that name was already in use by another California Republican organization. Thus, an alternate name was chosen that still invoked the memory of President Lincoln: Log Cabin Republicans. Historical accounts by biographers that Lincoln may have been gay surfaced long after the organization was formed, and did not contribute to the choice of the name.
