This morning, the home office of AMD demonstrated a 4x4 enthusiast system, affectionately referred to as the Quad Father, running a variety of different multi-threaded applications. Among the demonstrations given, Half Life 2 was run while playing MP3 audio and MPEG4 video running in the background.
AMD, in an attempt to appeal to the entire enthusiast market (not just the high-end enthusiast market) , promised dual CPU bundles for less than a $1,000. AMD says they are targeting what they call the Mega-tasking enthusiast, those of us who use their machines for everything, all the time. Hopefully this little nugget of information will hold you over for now, well have more details for you soon.

No thanks! Believe it or not by the time I was all done with my first 486 I was up into the $2400 to $2700 range.
But that s not as bad as the associate at work who had to be first guy on the block with a 286, for $4000.
$4000 used to be considered the sweet spot where they would start selling lots of them.

LOL! if you don't do bleeding edge games I could configure you a cheaper system with integrated graphics(with a pci-e slot for future upgradeability) if you want..

I liked the flight sims but they went away because the development of the AI cost to much compared to the amount of games sold.
Falcon 3 had only dos graphics, but one the best (if not the best) of all flight sim AI's ever.
Essentially right now what I have going is a few separate browsers and multiple windows in each one, several multimedia links to you-tube and the like, and some of the windows are running Java apps /applets, then there will be a few graphics programs loaded up, along with a word processor, excel etc.

that acer would be fine for what you do then. :)
To: RunningWolf
actually that Acer is very good price.. i just tried to match
it in parts and its a very good price, would be hard to build a system for that much.... :D
To: RunningWolf
if you did get a system yet, and you are short on funds like many of us, maybe it would be st to wait until direct X 10 is out then get a system...
To: Echo Talon
That might be the best. Also as most of the world uses windows, wait till the new version of that comes out too.

do you use linux at all? I have used the public beta(Vista) and it seems like it will be pretty good coupled with a dual core processor. :)
It just seems like buying a new system right doesn't make sense, with DX10 video cards coming out shortly and Vista too... :\

I have not used Linux lately.
I used to have a machine configured so I could boot up into several different OS, Linux included. I stuck with OS2 until finally it lagged behind on all the WWW multimedia features. That was mainly a browser and plug-in areas where it really began to lag behind.
