AMD Demonstrates 4x4 Enthusiast System
HardOCP ^ | July 25, 2006 3:00 PM (CDT) | Posted by Steve 3:00 PM (CDT)

This morning, the home office of AMD demonstrated a 4x4 enthusiast system, affectionately referred to as the “Quad Father”, running a variety of different multi-threaded applications. Among the demonstrations given, Half Life 2 was run while playing MP3 audio and MPEG4 video running in the background.

AMD, in an attempt to appeal to the entire enthusiast market (not just the high-end enthusiast market) , promised dual CPU bundles for less than a $1,000. AMD says they are targeting what they call the Mega-tasking enthusiast, those of us who use their machines for everything, all the time. Hopefully this little nugget of information will hold you over for now, we’ll have more details for you soon.

Well since the other components are so cheap, I can up it a little on the CPU-MB-RAM part of the equation.

I spent $300 on the first ever main-board I bought, so sticker shock will not phase me in those areas, tell me what you think.

Regards,

RW

the motherboard and processor have a warranty though Intel and
ASUS... you could still get the 6mo, warranty and tech support from Monarch, if you need someone to help you out. :)

Hey thanks I can go for that. Thanks for the info. Thar looks to be my benchmark because believe it or not, I find my P4 2.2Ghz/1G Ram is overloaded at times.

BTW, Asus boards are very good and worth the $$ They were around back then too while AIT is gone.

what do you like in a Video Card?

Thanks again

for memory i would get this

Newegg

this is one persons review of it from newegg...

runs good on p5wdh

Pros: price, overclocking, micron chip, and good customer service eamil reply fast!...

so thats looks like that ticket... Cons: package is not going good... More »

Other Thoughts: P5wdh bios 0602 and conroe E6600 together with this ram, works great. 2.45v can push up to DDR2 1066 4-4-3-4-2. very nice memory. and DDR2 800 4-4-4-12 with only 1.9v.

as far a video cards go, its a crossfire deal so i'd go with ATI x1800 or x1900... if you have a PCI-E card now i'd just use that until directX10 comes out this winter...

also IF you go with a Crossfire setup(2 video cards **you dont have to) but if you do, remember to get a nice beefy power supply... get a quality one anyhow...

"An amazing story of how they were able to capitalize quickly with the Athlon."
It is a brutal market, that is for sure.

Whoah! did you see that link? They want $2,235.99 for that HardDisk! The other link to the (Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS (Perpendicular Recording Technology) 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM) at $94.99 is much better LOL

Wow.., Perpendicular Recording Technology What will they come up with next? Well it looks like the hard disk bottleneck went away again for a little while.

When I get the system built I will let you know.

On another question. If I don't go with the DDR2 Ram, do I loose all the benefits of the CPU? I was think on maybe going that route until the ram price came down.

you MUST used DDR2 ram with Core2Duo and that ASUS Motherboard...

look at this from OCworkbench.com article... this board supports core2Duo and supports ddr ddr2 and old AGP! :) now thats good for the budget builders... and this board is pretty cheep also...

Considering the performance factor, the ASRock 775Dual-VSTA based on the VIA PT880Pro chipset + 8237A is considered an old pair of chipsets. The North bridge supports only a PCIe x4. Results shows that 3D performance takes a dip in comparison with the 3 other boards. Although this board is slightly slower, it offers a native AGP implementation and supports both DDR and DDR2 modules (operated seperately). It gives budget users a chance who wants to tap the power of Core 2 Duo/Extreme CPU power without going through the hassle of upgrading to the more expensive DDR2 modules. The options opened for AGP also allow users to be able to use both the AGP and PCIe graphics card at the same time for surround display. The BIOS offers very minimum options for you to adjust other than the FSB. The board is also Windows Vista™ Premium Logo Hardware Ready.

ocworkbench.com

asrock ASRock 775Dual-VSTA Socket T (LGA 775) VIA PT880 PRO ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $58.99

Just think about it, you can use the video card and memory that you have right now... :D hehehe.... actually that may be the way to go just to tide you over for 6 months or so... , then get a new mobo(better overclocking), better ram, and better video card when DX10 comes out, you cna still use the E6600 processor... :)

what is your current system specs?

hard drive(ata, sata)?
video card (pci-e or agp)?
memory(ddr400 or ddr2)?

if you have DDR400 memory and an AGP or PCI-e card you could get the

ASRock 775Dual-VSTA $59 newegg.com
Intel E6600 $360 monarchcomputer.com
total = $419 + shipping costs if any...

In 1982 or so, when the IBM PC was still considered a toy, I bought a factory-assembled system very similar to the one you are describing (two 8" floppies)for $10,000 for a business I owned.

You too?

Remember...4.7 MHZ..64K RAM memory...2 - 360K floppies and a green screen. Then again I was skinny, had brown hair, which grew from all parts of my head and a hangover was something old people got.

Memories.

Well this machine will become a back up or dedicated to graphics programs etc or something.

I was just trying to sort of keep the cost of the 'box' (cpu main board ram video card) close to $1k or under and then move some of the peripherals over to it. But I do like that new platform it looks like what I need.

That might work and then I don't have to build it myself.

That one thing I have found in the last few years, by the time you are all done, you haven't really gained much if any by building it yourself.
