Prayers for my 24 year old kittie -- (doing much better now)
Me | 07/20/2006 | me

Posted on 07/20/2006 11:51:19 AM PDT by freedumb2003

My kittie "Musica" is 24 years old. Up until now, she has done well but the vet says her thyroid is failing.

She has been with me for almost my entire adult life. She has been on thyroid (and other) medication for the last 6 years but it looks like the medication isn't working any more.

The vet said radiation therapy might work but 24 equates to over a hundred years old in human terms. It would be torture to put her through that. Even a trip to the vet is an ordeal.

Those are all great, but that pic of Mandy is a potential award-winner!

Well, I know myself, I fight for the lives of my cats even though there are times it might be hopeless. I know one cat I had, Muffin, she had kidney failure but we kept her alive for 2 and a half years with it, she passed on a minth's away from turning 17. Greystone had kidney failure when he was barely 5 years old, died within 3 weeks. A week and a half later after we laid greystone to rest, Boo, 16, got sick and we thought we were losing him but he bounced back, diagnosis, an infection of unknown origin. Pansy, my soon to by 19 year old calico cat has thyroid problems too, we had to adjust her dosage a bit but she seem to be doing fine although I think there is room for some more fine tuning.

I guess it if was me, I'd try the radiation or surgery although the latter is risky for a 24 year old, even a 19 year old. Still talk to your vet, think on it, pray to God and make the decision, I can't tell you what to do of course but as I said in my last sentence, in my case, I would fight to keep her alive.

I feel your pain. My 9 year old cat has some kind of intestinal cancer. She's fading fast, although doesn't seem to be suffering (she's on predisone to help reduce the swelling of the tumor, and it also helps her appetite).

I'll pray for your cat. Please keep mine in prayer as well.

I know what iti s like, I lost our first cat to cancer, Cricket, she was a calico, lived from 1984 to 1994.

Cricket 1984 - 1994

Prayers up to both of yuns.

19 is definitely Up There.

The concern we have is that she really is very attached to us (or, to be more specific, my wife since I am on the road).

When we take vacation, we can only go for 4 days at the most. If we are gone longer than that when we come home Musica won't eat for a day or so. Even when our circle of pet-sitters (Musica's "uncles" and "aunties" who Musica really likes) check on her they say she pines for us behind the front door.

And that is at home, where she is comfortable. A week or more in a strange place with strange people after having a procedure that at the very least would make her feel wierd? She wouldn't survive. I sure as heck isn't the money. If it tapped me completely, I would do everything for her. Unless I thought it was causing her pain.

Congratulations on keeping Pansy and Boo going. You clearly are loving people who take care of your kitties well. I will keep them and you in my prayers daily.

Great cats. One of ours, Lucie, has diabetes, so we have to give her insulin twice a day. Easy as pie--she thinks it's a great way to get attention, and walks right into the bedroom (we put her on the bed for her shots) when it's time. The vet tells us she probably doesn't feel the shots, so probably she thinks this is just some ritual of some sort appropriate for who she is--the queen of all there is, according to her. ;)

Yeah, it's a little trouble, and yeah, feline insulin is expensive, but I wouldn't trade a minute of her life for the money. So far, our other two are perfectly healthy. Knock wood!!

Isn't she a beauty. She is my special love. She likes to pretend she is all aloof but she's one of the most dependent ones around. (as in, whine whine, you're holding me --....... yikes! Don't leave me!)

Great graphic! :) Thanks Lady Jag -- the support of all of you means more than you could possible imagine (or maybe you can).

I have had several note that they have gotten comfort from this thread.
