Iran wants disputed clay tablets returned from US

The 2,500-year-old Persian tablets, which have been studied for decades at the University of Chicago, give a unique insight into the workings of the Persian empire with cuneiform etchings of payments and rations made to priests, guards and workers... those still under study are at the center of an Israeli compensation suit connected to a shooting in the West Bank blamed on an Iranian-backed group. A U.S. court has ruled that Iran's assets can be seized and last month a U.S. judge upheld the ruling, prompting a new campaign by Iran to secure the tablets' return, including an appeal to the U.N. cultural body UNESCO... The compensation suit was brought by relatives of Yaron Ungar, killed in a shooting in 1996 near Beit El, a Jewish settlement in the West Bank. Four members of Palestinian group Hamas, which Iran supports, were convicted by an Israeli court.

Also possibly pingworthy for other lists? IMHO Iran should have the tablets back, just as soon as it has a legitimate government.

To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list. Thanks.

The tablets should stay with the university. Which is apparently where they have been since 1930 anyway. Iran and the people who filed that lawsuit should get over themselves.

Why should we give them back? They'll only smash them up, destroying history in the process. Radical Muslims have a tendency to destroy that which is different from them.

How about we send the tablets back when they abandon Islam and reinstate Zoroastrianism?

How about we send the tablets back when they abandon Islam and reinstate Zoroastrianism?

If they did that, they'd end up worshipping Ahriman, and there'd be no improvement.

Remember when those beautiful Buddha statues were smashed by the Taliban. Don't give anything back to those cultural cretins!

Until they get rid of the mullahs and the 21st Century Haman they have as president, Iran can kindly go kiss my Dixie tailpipe.

Maybe if they had a genuine government, that had established relations with the U.S., they could ask nicely, via our embassy in Tehran....

Or, maybe, since that is NOT the case, they can just have Jimmah Catarrh relay the message.

If a democratically elected government was in power they'd probably get them. The Ayatollah don't care about pre-islamic Iran anyway so why do they want them?

I have to respectfully disagree -- Zoroastrians do not worship Ahriman any more than Christians worship Satan -- they merely recognize him as the source of evil.

I am not a Zoroastrian, but from what I have studied of their faith it seem that it is on the whole quite benevolent. There is none of Islam's "street-gang cult" agressiveness in the Avesta.

The ancient Persians were, like all major powers of the time, an aggressive empire. But they never sought to "convert by the sword".

I seem to do this a lot whenever I leave off the /sarc on some of my posts.

I'll walk you through the implications of my post.

In Islam, Allah and the Judeo-Christian God are supposed to be one and the same. Supposed to be, but they aren't even close. Islam has more in common with something that Satan would've conceived than with either Judaism or Christianity.

Now, my comment was sarcastic - and the ironic tone should've been obvious to anyone who studied Zoroastrian. You take a death cult, convert them to Zoroastrianism, and discover that you still have a death cult because you don't just take the evil out of men by changing the name of the religion they follow. Thus, instead of worshippers of Ahura Mazda, you get followers of Ahriman.
