Boulder deputy clubs menacing bridge "troll"

By John Ingold

Denver Post Staff Writer

A golf club-wielding man who tried to extort tolls from people crossing a bike path bridge while claiming to be the bridge's troll is facing menacing and drug charges, police said.

The troll's reign of terror came to an end, police said, when he threatened an off-duty Boulder sheriff's deputy, who snatched the clubs from the man and whacked him with one. Even after a Boulder police officer, with a drawn stun gun, arrived and ordered the man to the ground, the man "continued to be verbally antagonistic, yelling that it was his bridge ... and that he was a troll," according to a police report.

The incident happened July 6 along the Bear Creek bike path near Colorado Avenue and Foothills Parkway.

Boulder police said they arrested Robert Hibbs, 19, on suspicion of felony menacing and drug possession and Bradley Boville, 18, on suspicion of drug possession and menacing.

Boville told officers that he and Hibbs had ingested a hallucinogen and then wanted to smoke a large marijuana cigarette that officers found on Boville, according to the police report. However, the pair didn't have a lighter so they decided to go to the bridge and start "asking" people for money to buy a lighter, the report said.

When sheriff's Sgt.Kevin Parker rolled down the path on his bike, he said he saw the two men holding golf clubs and blocking the bridge.

"It will cost you a dollar to cross the bridge," the men said, according to Parker's statement in the report.

When Parker tried to ride around them, he said, Hibbs told Boville, "Go stab that guy," police allege. Boville moved toward Parker with a jaggedly broken golf club, Parker said. Parker said he retreated and called 911.

Hibbs then approached the lawman with two golf clubs, hit the tire of his bike and raised the clubs threateningly, Parker said in his statement. Parker said he grabbed the clubs, smacked Hibbs on the shoulder and ran.

According to the police report, witnesses said the pair threatened others on the bike path before Parker arrived.

Most trols are easier to deal with.

Back in the early '70's, when I attended CU in Boulder, there was a group of speed addicts called the "STP Family", who wrought all sorts of havoc. This sounds like their work. Anyone know if they are still around?

The STPs lived up in the Nederland area. Rumors are that some of them were the founders of the Rainbow family.

They broke into a friend's apartment over Christmas vacation and smashed everything, leaving smeared feces on the walls. On my very first day in Boulder, one was laying spread eagle on the asphalt in a metered parking space. I inquired as to what he was doing, and he replied that he had paid for the space. Indeed, the meter showed he had ten minutes!

Just to add more to this story, a coworker sent me this link

And it gets better;
The strangest part of the reports, however, noted that a large joint found in Boville's front pocket appeared to be rolled out of two one-dollar bills.

Sounds like the Clintons upon leaving the White House.

"Boycott Boulder"

Those people are insane down there but I do like to take a bench on the mall and watch the wackiness from time to time.

I like that writer's attitude.
As if Boulder didn't have enough to think about, what with attempting to singlehandedly stop global warming and the war in Iraq.
What is scary though, is that my 83 year-old parents live a couple of blocks from there. I've got to talk them into getting a burgler alarm.

I love these Boulder threads. Brings all CU Grads together for a good laugh.

I remember that STP group. I doubt they are still there. But there are always willing replacements. They used to hang out on The Hill next to Bova's. Which I think is still there.

I enjoy walking on The Hill and telling my kids the businesses which used to occupy that space. Can spend all evening with Boulder stories. Like the riots in 1970 or was it 71? Tear gas everywhere. Ah a right of passage.

Skank-loving troll, dirty and smelly, With damp slimy skin and big hairy belly, Fat,muddy fingers and grubby wet toes, Hot, steamy breath and rings through each nose. With stains on his shirt and holes in his socks, Teeth that need cleaning and crap in his locks, Tears in trousers and scuffs on his shoe, He's waiting to foul the air nearest you.

He likes dirty ditches and hiding in holes, Is certain to lose when he fights other trolls, Is very attentive, will woo you with roses, After he's used them to pick both his noses. He lives on his own, in a dark stinking pit, Oozing with slime and covered in spit, Now feeling lonely, he hopes there's a chance, He can show someone else the thing in his pants.

yep, sounds like most of the leftist I know. Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Boulder is too crowded for me to even want to go watch the freaks on Pearl St. I would rather think of what boulder looked like when my Grandmother was born there in 1895.
