BRISTOL, Conn. - Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said Wednesday night that he was told he was "seconds, maybe a minute away from dying" immediately after his motorcycle accident last month.
Roethlisberger, in his first interview since the June 12 accident, told ESPN's "SportsCenter" that he doesn't remember much about the accident when he rammed his motorcycle into a car that was making a left turn in front of him on a Pittsburgh street. He did, however, remember what he was told by people at the scene.
"They told me that I was literally seconds, maybe a minute away from dying because I slit a vein or artery in my mouth or my throat and it was draining blood right into my stomach and luckily the paramedic noticed it and stopped it or else I would have had too much blood in my stomach," he said in Los Angeles where he was for the taping of the ESPY Awards.

Yeah, I thought that the accident looked a lot more serious than we were led to believe...
I'm glad he made it.
He knows what mistakes were made, so as a rider, I'm not going judge him.
Pardon the pun, but he doesn't need any "armchair quarterbacks".

Boy, I sure hope if I am ever in an accident, that these people aren't at the scene of my accident.

"I have no concerns about Ben," Cowher said backstage. "He's going to have to get hit a couple times to see if he's all the way back.Dont put him on a bike, Bill, to get those hits.

the accident when he rammed his motorcycle into a car that was making a left turn in front of him How does a driver making a turn into the path of the motorcycle become Ben's fault? Did Ben intentionally hit the car?
To: rabidralph
That's exactly WHY you need a helmut: OTHER DRIVERS can kill you!

I'd like to know how Bettis repayed Roth. It had to have been something really nice.

Ben, when you are on a bike without a helmet, you are always seconds from dying.

How does a driver making a turn into the path of the motorcycle become Ben's fault? Did Ben intentionally hit the car?Maybe he was going too fast and couldn't stop.

The driver of the car probably didn't even see him. Many people are blind to the presence of bikes. They don't expect to see them.

Easy, Ben was inexperienced. He did NOT have respect for the intersection. He entered that zone with mind of cager.
He left that zone with "intersection allergy" of an experienced rider.
Two kinds of rider: them that been down, them that are going down.
The first respects the intersection, and believes the oncoming is aiming. The second trusts oncoming traffic.
That's why helmets are still required in PA.
If you have the experience, then we say, you have the option to ride without.

How does blood "drain" into one's stomach? You'd need to swallow it first.
I would assume the paramedic used a tourniquet.

I dunno... if this had been the case I can't imagine the press around here not finding it out.... Lets face it, that was the biggest news story to hit pittsburgh in a LONG time... every hound in town was selling their soul to scoop on this one.
