James Taylor Is Top 'Wuss'
WUSA ^ | 07/12/06

Posted on 07/12/2006 12:36:28 PM PDT by Pokey78

And the loser is ... James Taylor? Sure to raise the ire of Sweet Baby James fans everywhere, Blender magazine has placed the sensitive folk-rocker atop its list of the 25 biggest wusses ever. The roster in the August issue (on newsstands Tuesday) accuses Taylor of initiating "an era of confessional, listen-to-my-troubles singer/songwriters and turn(ing) self-examination into a hallmark of the baby-boom generation."

Who else deserves wedgies? Nick Lachey, at No. 2, for a post-divorce disc that "wallows in so much misery and self-pity it makes Morrissey sound like the Pussycat Dolls."

Next are Dan Fogelberg, Boyz II Men, Peter Cetera, Kenny G, Rascal Flatts, Babyface and Chris Martin of Coldplay. His wussiest moment? "Being derided as 'a bit wimpy' by noted ruffian Charlotte Church." In 10th place is Hilary Duff, "a sex- and drug-free sprite best summed up by the name of her next movie character: Sunshine Goodness."

A round-up of sissy songs includes Taylor Hicks' Do I Make You Proud and You're Beautiful by James Blunt, "this generation's Debby Boone, only not as pretty."

I said "at least since Pet Sounds," and I know he sang on "California Girls," which leads me to believe he was also on "The Little Girl I Once Knew," "Barbara Ann," "Sloop John B," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," Caroline No," "God Only Knows," "Heroes And Villains," "Darlin'" and everything else until the early 1970s. He was also on "Kokomo."

Saying he's not a real Beach Boy is like saying Ron Wood isn't a real Rolling Stone (although he's been with them for over 20 years and is in all their official group shots).

Cry-y-y-iiiiiiiiing...over you!

Listen to his voice when he sings those words - it's not self-pity - his voice literally soars - it's rage and sadness together; not a whimper, but a bang. And then there's Running Scared. Sounds like a wussy sentiment but:

Then all at once he was standing there
So sure of himself, his head in the air
My heart was breaking, which one would it be
You turned around and walked away with me.

Yow - take, that, Mr. Macho! You've got the looks but I got the girl! Orbison was one of the few guys who could simultaneously be sensitive and strong in his lyrics, there's pain and suffering, but also hope and redemption. I've loved his music since I was a kid, and precisely for that reason. His songs are about love as it really is - not romanticized and fluffy, but complicated and intense.

Any male who appears on American Idol is a wuss. Yea.....Taylor Hicks will be a multi-millionaire and pretty soon, like Kelly Clarkson, he'll be able to do exactly what he wants to do. Wuss???? I don't think so. I think it takes alot of guts to do what these kids do.

Did you know that Richard Marx is married to Cynthia Rhodes who played Penny, the dancer who gets pregnant, in Dirty Dancing? Just a little trivia for ya. Marx is still around, he's known more for composing.

Dan Hill ("Sometimes When We Touch")

I think a male singer can be considered a wuss if his fan base is made up predominantly of adolescent girls. LOL! Dan Hill was my favorite when I was a young teen. When I was 14 or so I saw he was playing at a club in Greenwich Village and I got a friend to go with me. It was great...and guess who his OPENING ACT was???? A newcomer named BILLY CRYSTAL!!! True story.

When I was a teenager I loved Donny Osmond and the Osmond Brothers. Donny would probably make the Top 50 wuss list.

Dan Hill and Dan Fogelberg sing in a similar style, although I do like a few Fogelberg songs.

I disagree. Fogelberg was much more talented than Hill, who basically was a one-hit wonder. Netherlands is still, one of my favorite albums of all time.

Well, I admit you may have a point---it takes something like moxie to get up in front of America and act like a total homo. But I submit to you this: does acting like a homo in public not, in fact, make one a de facto wuss?

And having millions of dollars does not nullify wussiness. Was Liberace a poor man? Is Boy George penniless? I'm sure even the cat who played "Monroe" in Too Close for Comfort earned a few shekels in his day.

To me, calling yourselves "the Beach Boys" without a Wilson Brother onstage is like Ringo Starr billing his group "The Beatles."

Or calling yourself CCR without a Fogerty. Oh wait, that almost happened...

Ray Stevens gets a lifetime pass for "The Haircut Song" alone. Utter brilliance. Plus, he deflated "Help Me Make it Through the Night."

In fairness to "Sweet Baby James" (which was actually written about his nephew), his demeanor is influenced by years in mental institutions and in therapy treating anxiety and depression.

Not to mention the drugs and...the super bitch he married a couple of years ago.

He married an attractive blonde by the name of Tanya Smedvig - or something like that. She was married to the 1st trumptet of the BSO and then got a divorce. Men love her (well, some men) and she has used her many talents to navigate into a position of importance with the symphony.

Since her relationship with Taylor she has managed to negotiate some choice appearances for her husband with the BSO. She has also arranged appearances in some other venues. She has been an asset to his career.

He is supposedly a genuinely nice guy - even though he is a total liberal. Nice guys usually love bitchy women.

Passive men need aggressive women, maybe.
