Three things:
1. Adjust those numbers DOWNWARD for the Fed's 20 year currency/credit INFLATION and you'll have a comparable figure;
2. The American "sheeple," like the "citizens" of Rome who rampaged through the streets crying for more "bread and circuses" while their liberties were being stripped away by the state, continually seek more passive and less intellectually demanding diversions. If you want to see a perfect blank stare, stand outside one of those theaters and ask these people to name their member of congress!
3. "No one will ever go broke UNDERESTIMATING the taste of the American people." H.L. Mencken. He could have added "intelligence."
Cynical? No, just realistic.

Finally, the first movie of the year that is strictly to entertain and not make a political statement.... one that allows people to do what we pay money to do -- escape from reality for a couple of hours. This one I will spend money to go see, I read that Depp has already said he'd gladly do a 4, 5, 6 -- he loves the character he gets to play.
What really makes me happy is it blowing Superman out of the water with it's "global" message.

Weird. I didnt think the first one was anything incredibly outstanding. Just an ok venture flick.
The seacreature people looked silly in the previews for this one.
Guess Im offically out of touch with pop culture now. At least some of it anyways.

It's in over 4,000 theatres, but still, 55 million in one day means a weekend gross easily over 100 million.

Saw it yesterday with my wife. Definitely not for younger kids! The movie was action packed and the special effects were well done. The "Davie Jones" plot was interesting but bordered on the grotesque. If I was a child, some unnecessary scenes would have given me nightmares. Overall, I'd say the plot moved quickly, was action packed, had only one or two somewhat funny lines and nothing that was overall stimulating in content. I'd see the third one based on this, though, just to see how it ends.
The witch reminded me of an old exgirlfriend from Brasil (she had better teeth and a very sexy Bahianan accent.) I take back the "nothing that was overall stimulating" part.
