NYC Subway Rider Critically Injured in Power-Saw Attack

NEW YORK — A man grabbed two cordless power saws off a subway station workbench and went on a rampage Thursday, swinging the saws at riders and slicing open a man's chest before running away, police said.

The 64-year-old victim, whose name was not released, was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Police were searching for the suspect, described by witnesses as a thin man in his 30s, who had earrings in both ears and was possibly carrying a teddy bear.

The attack occurred before dawn at a subway station a few blocks south of Columbia University.

Wielding a saw in each hand, the man took a swipe at one rider on a platform and missed, police said. Moments later, he cut into the man's chest at a turnstile before bolting out of the station, still carrying the power tools, which were later found in a trash can.

Police were reviewing security camera videotape.

Bloomberg has given the subways back to the psychos and the homeless. This is not surprising to anyone who rides the subways these days.

Power tools have triggers, you know. There was no trigger lock nor was there any technology so that only a licensed carpenter could operate the saw. Paging Johnny Edwards, please pick up the platinum courtesy phone.

Possible break in bizarre subway attack

Police question a suspect in cutting a man with two industrial saws

By Marcus Solis

(Upper West Side - WABC, July 6, 2006) - One man's commute became a personal nightmare this morning, as he was viciously attacked on a subway platform by a man using a set of unusual weapons. Now police are searching for the suspect.

Eyewitness News reporter Marcus Solis has the latest. At noontime police had a suspect in custody that they picked up after another incident near the attack in the subway. The victim unfortunately was just walking into the subway station as the suspect was running out.

The 64-year-old man was stabilized at the scene before being taken to the hospital, the victim of a frightening and bizarre attack.

Around 3:30 this morning someone stole a set of tools from a crew working in the 110th street subway station. Witnesses and police say the suspect began threatening the workers who were installing a new computerized passenger information system.

Reginald Keene,Transit Worker: "He was chasing the workers with the saw, the contractors."

The suspect then moved down the platform of the southbound "1" line as if shadowboxing with the battery powered saws. The victim was walking into the station through the turnstile when the suspect took a swing, and began cutting him with the tools.

The victim yelled, "He's drilling me! He's drilling me!" according to a witness. "When I heard the drilling noise, I thought he was being electrocuted on the track," said the witnesses, Isaac Prescott.

The suspect ran out of the station west on 110th street, dumping the tools in a metal trash can where they were recovered by police. Detectives are reviewing surveillance cameras to see if they captured the man's image.

The victim is at st. Luke's hospital in critical condition, but is expected to survive.

The suspect was described as a black man, 5'11" tall, medium complexion and a clean shaved head, wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and tan work boots. He fled the scene.

Shortly after that incident there was another attack and the alleged suspect of that attack fits the description of the suspect in the bizarre subway attack.

Be on the lookout for a man in the subway with two gold earrings and a teddy bear!

No, of COURSE drugs aren't involved...

BINGO! It is impossible to speculate what might have happened - but with citizens disarmed, it makes it impossible for citizens to stop such violent crimes.....

All it would have taken is for one armed citizen to end the rampage before the old man was injured...

"A man running through the streets of New York with Gold Earrings carrying a teddy bear....

That makes it even harder for the police to find him. But if they do I bet they will find out the bear egged him on and made him do it. You can never trust those Teddy Bears as any reader of Theodore Sturgeon knows."

Vermont Teddy Bear's "Handy Bear" may have egged him on...
