"Soccer is un-American."
The Clarion Herald ^ | July 1, 2006 | Father William Maestri

Posted on 07/05/2006 2:13:36 PM PDT by Ebenezer

Father William Maestri with the Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans, Louisiana makes this damning (at least to soccer moms nationwide) remark in his latest column on The Clarion Herald, the Archdiocese's newspaper. The quote is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg as he rants in no uncertain terms against this sport which he mockingly calls "kickball".

But then, what is the Padre's sport of choice? Not basketball, not football, not even "the national pastime" of baseball. It's tennis; Wimbledon tennis!

The article is available only in .pdf format, so I urge fellow FReepers to access it through the source URL, read it, and reach your own conclusions. While I agree with Father's disdain for fútbol, "take me out to the ball game".....anytime.

The only game more FRUSTRATING than soccer is cricket. Its a game that can last FOR DAYS and STILL end in a tie!

I really got sick of the "Americans don't understand soccer" articles in the local paper for the cup, with the attitude that we're not sophisticated enough. When I see our version of football being "understood" over there, they can have their prissy sport. And stop forcing it on our kids as if it's more "cultured" to play a european sport.

Can I just add....England was robbed....and Rooney's red card was an overblown call. Have to say, I've thoroughly enjoyed this world cup.

I agree if you watch soccer on american tv its very boring. The announcers sound like there about to fall asleep. If you want to get into it watch it on a spanish channel like univision. You may not understand a word they say but you can hear the enthusiasm they have for the game. Plus the women on the spanish channels are extremely HOT!!!!

Vinnie Castilla donated a lot of money to have a baseball field built, it's called, surprisingly enough, 'Vinnie Castilla Field'. But it's lined as a soccer field, and since no one uses it for baseball, a playground was built in what used to be the outfield.

hockey is my viewing sport of choice

No doubt as it is an attempt to spice up the mindlessly boring game of soccer by making them play it on ice.

It didn't work.

Soccer requires endurance more than anything. Diffrent sports require diffrent athletic abitlies, what a concept. I doubt a soccor player would be able to take a hit by a NFL lineman, likewise i doubt an NFL lineman would have the endurace of a soccor player.

I would love to see red and yellow cards in football. Just imagine that in the 4th quarter of the Superbowl the Steelers offense has 11 players to the Dallas defense's 10. Talk about adding some more flavor to the game.

That said, soccer is a gigantic snoozefest. So what if they are in great condition. So are joggers and I don't watch them either. As a matter of fact, I would rather watch golf than soccer and I don't like golf.

'In this country, we have baseball, football, and basketball.'

Those are three of the gayest sports on earth. Anyway, I thought the Polaks liked 'soccer' as you wrongly call it.
