A woman's plans to celebrate her husband's release from jail, complete with candles and a veil-draped lamp, is believed to have sparked a three-alarm blaze early Monday that destroyed much of a Harvey motel.
The woman leased Room 223, where the fire started, at the Best Western at 1700 Lapalco Blvd. in anticipation of her husband's midnight release Sunday from the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center in Gretna, said motel owner Dawn Boteler.
The couple's names were not released, but the woman lives in the New Orleans area, he said.
"When the fire started, they were the first ones to leave," Boteler said. "They're long gone."
He added: "Everybody got out, and nobody was injured. That would be the important thing, first."
The cause for the 4 a.m. blaze is under investigation by State Fire Marshal investigators, but Assistant Chief Terry Thibodaux of the Harvey Volunteer Fire Company said the fire appears to have started in Room 223.
Firefighters received a report that the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office dispatched a deputy to the room to investigate a disturbance before the fire, but the Sheriff's Office was unable to confirm it.
Boteler said one of his employees saw the lighted candles and veiled lamp through Room 223's window's partially opened curtains. The woman told the employee she planned to stay for two weeks, he said. He turned over information about the couple to investigators and added that he does not like to lease rooms to local people.
"Local people always trash rooms," Boteler said.

Funny thing is, with all the N'awlins Katrina "victims", when the local people are 1500 miles from home, they always trash the rooms, as well.

I stayed in that very room 5 years ago! The woman I was with wasn't quite so incendiary.
"There ain't nothing in Room 237, but you ain't got no business going in there anyway, so stay out! You understand, stay out!"
Whew! That was close! At least they didn't go into Room 237!
