A scary crackdown. It's bad...

Our manager pulled the three of us aside tonight and laid down the law...

Don't worry--they're locked outside.

Put they next to this, er, lovely door-to-door salesman

No, it had nothing to do with them, sad-to-say.

The problem is with "safety hazards," a.k.a. "boxes that aren't stacked at least waste-high."

Thing is, in our store, we have what's called freight, which refers boxes to stuff that goes in our department that we stack on the edges of aisles, and gradually do it all as time goes by. Then we get a new truck coming in and get a whole bunch more. That's how we fill our shelves; we don't do overnight stocking (which works better).

Well, there's been a rash of accidents in other stores because of people tripping over boxes that aren't stacked high enough. We haven't had ANY at our store, but they're cracking down on us anyway.

And the thing is, they keep finding those boxes in our department, even though we're working hard to stack them high enough. They told us today that starting tomorrow, if they find ANY more not-high-enough stacks, we're going to start getting written up...and if it continues, heads just might roll.

That is just ridiculous.

Sounds like someone is coming down on your manager hard, who's head it is that may roll.

Well, what they're going to do is this:

The store manager is coming in EVERY morning and scanning our department like a hawk. If he finds any boxes not stacked waste-high (I'm not sure who's waste we're going by...some people are taller than others), then the person who worked till closing the previous night is automatically getting written up.

Me personally, I have to close only one night out of the week. But I don't want to see ANYone in my department get in trouble. It's the last thing we need. So I'm very worried about the guy who DOES have to close every night.

You don't think anyone would do anything to sabotage your department, do you?

No, I don't think that at all.

However, when people in other departments are bored and having nothing to do, they very often come over to us to help out. (Ours is the busiest department, hands-down).

Their help is great, but many of them don't understand the safety rules very well...and often, THEY are the ones who leave the messes.

Unstacked boxes are one thing, but empty boxes lying around was something we ALL almost got burned for. Fortunately, I think we've effectively stopped that, but the not-high-enough stacks are being treated just as unfavorably.
