Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to please veterinarians with his progress in his recovery from surgery to repair his shattered right hind leg sustained in the Preakness Stakes on May 20.
The colt remains in intensive care at the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. "Barbaro continues to improve; he is maintaining his weight and his coat looks good," said Corinne Sweeney, D.V.M, executive director of the Widener Hospital. "I would say he is a happy, healthy horse."

Much of this may not be news to most of you, but I thought the comment about his coat was a bright and welcome sign ........ but what do I know about horses. All I know is that I love these animals and this particular fellow is one sweet "guy".
"A happy, healthy horse" --- music to my ears.

If you could some how relay the prospect of 'being put out to stud' to the animal, I'd bet that would be a tremendous help in improving his mental fight!

I think some "horse whisperers" have let him in on that sweet possibility.

Thank you for the ping. Alex who puts updates on the Tim Woolley racing site talked to Micheal Matz and he said that when he visited him yesterday he scratched his ear again. Also a school teacher who used to work for Matz in his showjumping days had her kids follow Barbaro's career for a project and, apparently really got into it. When it was finished they sent it to Matz and he passed it on to the Jackson's who say they want to make it into a children's book. They were all very impressed with the project. Also this morning when Dr Richardson visited Barbaro he was laying down, and when Barbaro saw him, he got up with no problems.

Also this morning when Dr Richardson visited Barbaro he was laying down, and when Barbaro saw him, he got up with no problems.Good to hear.................... but my fingers continue to be crossed until and through the day that all support is removed from his right hind leg. I hope he behaves.
That will be a day that will not be comfortable.
I pray for this good animal.

Hopefully they will have him in a padded stall, in case he kicks out.

Awww, I got goosebumps about the school project possibly becoming a children's book ... oh, my. How dear!

Oh, Barbaro "nickers" - he definitely "nickers"! They parade all the mares past his stall on a daily basis, lol. That is, the mares "ask" to be paraded past his stall on a daily basis!

The two casts you see, one for the Broken leg and the other is to raise the level or height of the other so there will not be resulting problems with other joints due to to un-natural height differences. Horses can and do die if they can not put weight on all fours. It is a testament to the people at Penn and to Barbaro himself that he lives! As heartbreaking as it is, it is a Miracle he is still here!
